Overview

New Mexico's Abiquiu Reservoir, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineer managed lake, is a beautiful recreational area complete with a scenic campground and a chance to see reptile fossils! This 5,200-surface-acre reservoir offers some of the finest fishing in northern New Mexico. Reptile fossils 200 million years old have been found in the area. The area includes a fine panoramic view of the Cerro Pedernal (Flint Mountain) from the dam. Abiquiu Reservoir is surrounded by red sandstone formations on Hwy 84 and adjacent to historical Pedernal Mountain to the south on Hwy 96. The scenery of the area includes Pinon (Pine), Juniper, and Sage among colorful rock formations. Surrounding attractions include: Ghost Ranch, Georgia O'Keefe Museum, San Pedro Wilderness, Cumbres Toltec Railroad, Chaco Canyon, Bandelier National Monument, Taos and Santa Fe, NM.

The Riana Campground is located on a 150-foot rock bluff overlooking Abiquiu Reservoir at 6,400 feet above sea level. The Riana Campground hosts 54 campsites. A number of sites include electric hookups and water hookup, shelters, grills, lantern holders and tent pads. Other facilities include a play structure, showers, sanitation station, picnic and fishing areas.

Activities

  • Boating

    Boating is allowed on the reservoir. Lake shore access for boat launching is one mile from the campground.

  • Camping

    The Riana Campground is located on a 150-foot rock bluff overlooking Abiquiu Lake at 6,400 feet above sea level. The Riana Campground hosts 54 campsites. A number of sites include electric hookups and water hookup, shelters, grills, lantern holders and tent pads. Other facilities include a play structure, showers, sanitation station, picnic and fishing areas.

  • Fishing

    Visitors can fish in Abiquiu Reservoir.

  • Hiking

    Visitors can take in the spectacular scenery with a hike.

  • Picnicking

    Picnic facilities are available under the trees along the river at the Rio Chama Recreation Area. Facilities are also available with a view of the lake at Cerrito Recreation Area and the Overlook.

Driving

Abiquiu Lake is located in northern New Mexico, 61 miles north of Santa Fe on Hwy 84 at the intersection of Hwy 96. From Española, NM, travel 30 miles north on U.S. Highway 84. Turn west on to State Highway 96 and continue 1 mile to the Riana Campground entrance.
