Joe Wheeler State Park
Overview
One of six state park resorts, Joe Wheeler Resort State Park is located on beautiful Wheeler Lake, famous for fishing, sailing and boating. Near Rogersville, in northwest Alabama, the park offers a modern resort lodge, restaurant and meeting facilities, camping, championship golf course and full-service marina, among many other amenities.
Activities
Boating
Joe Wheeler State Park is a haven for boaters. A marina on the Tennessee River has 96 covered slips and 88 uncovered sailboat slips. Pontoon boat, fishing boat, and paddle boat rentals are available also. Several boat launch ramps are located around the park.
Bicycling
Mountain bikers are welcome on the 2.5 mile loop trail in the Southside cabin area.
Camping
There are 116 campsites in the improved campground - 110 sites with full hook-ups, which includes water, electric and sewage. Joe Wheeler State Park also has a primitive campground for those seeking a more rustic experience.
Fishing
Joe Wheeler State Park offers a host of fishing opportunities. Both large and smallmouth bass are found in abundance, as well as numerous other species of fish, including three types of striped bass.
Golfing
The park has an 18 hole championship course designed by Earl Stone that is set in rolling hills along the river.
Hiking
The park has roughly 5 miles of hiking trails. The most popular is a network of trails between the Day Use Area and the Resort Lodge.
Picnicking
Joe Wheeler's picnic facilities include large picnic pavilions, a sandy beach swimming area, tennis courts, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, a large open playing field and ample shoreline for bank fisherman.
RVing
The campground is a favorite among campers and features large, level sites among towering pines. There are 116 campsites in the improved campground - 110 sites with full hook-ups, which includes water, electric and sewage hook-ups.
Directions
Driving
AL Hwy 101 crosses the river on Wheeler Dam. From the north end of the dam go north 3.0 miles, turn right (east) on US Hwy 72 and drive 4.3 miles. The entrance to the park is on the right.
Flying
The closest major airport is Huntsville International. A variety of car rental agencies is available.
