Urban Adventure Gear

Thanks to healthier economic conditions, Memorial Day travel is expected to increase this year. According to an AAA report, approximately 32.1 million Americans are planning to travel—a 5.4 percent increase from last year. They'll spend an average of $809 on their holiday trip, money that I’ve decided to put toward a short staycation exploring neighborhoods in New York that I’ve been meaning to visit. If you live in an urban wonderland and don’t plan to join the traveling masses, you might want to consider investing in a few things that will make your forays away from home more comfortable.

Most of us mistakenly use sun block only when we are at the beach or at play. The fact is that you can get burned wherever you go, but you are especially susceptible when you aren’t well prepared. I’ve become partial to Aveeno® Continuous Protection® Sunblock Spray with SPF 50. This formulation offers better, longer-lasting sun protection and is easy to apply. It’s waterproof and lightweight and gives protection against UV-A and UV-B rays.

Last week marked the short-lived Bike to Work Week. I, for one, didn’t think that a week was long enough and plan to ride to work every day this summer. The Keen Commuter is perfect for summertime riding and offers protection, flexibility and freedom (though not really high fashion) for your feet. These all-terrain sandals have an integrated full-length SPD-compatible plate for clipless pedals, are easy and comfortable to walk in and have good traction if you decide to use them on the river or at the beach (though you make sure that you keep the cleat—not included—dry and free of sand).

If you haven’t already kicked the bottled water habit, now is the great time to start. Camelbak’s Water Bottle has an integrated no-drip, easy-sip Big Bite™ valve lets you enjoy your drink by biting down on the valve and sipping. Mine fits just as easily into my bike’s bottle cage as it does my backpack. The water bottle is made of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester, which provides excellent impact resistance, is completely BPA-free and dishwasher safe. Sur La Table, not known for outdoor gear, has them on sale for 60 percent off (green only), while supplies last.

If you have any gear that you love perfect for urban exploration, let us know. Whatever you do this weekend, have a great holiday and remember to apply your sunscreen and keep your water bottle filled.
