Executive Office Building, Utulei

This US$10-million structure, erected at Utulei in 1991, is home to a good part of American Samoa's 4,000-strong bureaucracy. A third of the territory's workforce is employed by the Government of American Samoa, which is able to run huge deficits thanks to US$72 million in annual subsidies and grants received from Washington. Though an unlikely tourist attraction, the Executive Office Building is symbolic of the largess that makes this semi-colony tick, and it's certainly worth a look. Also visit the adjacent Feleti Barstow Library, built in 1998.
