Ken Burns' mega-docs have spawned a star or two. Shelby Foote rose from obscurity after his bravura performance on The Civil War. Buck O'Neil, a pretty darn good baseball player in the Negro Leagues and the first African American major-league coach, found the greatest stardom of his life after being a major voice on Baseball.

Ken Burns' latest PBS opus -- this one clocking in at 12 hours -- arrives this fall with "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" (Sept. 27-Oct. 2, WQED), a history of the national park system that begins in 1851 and ends in 1980.A question during Burns' press conference for the film got a big laugh but also made a worthwhile point about the expansive nature of Burns' films: "If someone has 12 hours, do you suggest they go to the Grand Canyon or watch your film?"

After 18 months of planning, Jason and Amy Beecher, along with their son, Noah, all of West Fargo, are traveling about 8,000 miles to raise support for the battle against epilepsy and to honor their daughter, Jess, who died of the disease in 2007.What began as a couple’s crusade to raise awareness of the disease soon became a family affair.“Initially we thought just Amy and I, but it has evolved into a family event,” Jason Beecher said.

July has been the
official Park and Recreation Month for over 20 years and in celebration of
this, Americans are urged to get out and visit our parks. Many parks and
recreation facilities around the country are hosting programs and activities to
promote the importance of the great outdoors. The National Park Service is
making it easier to get outdoors this summer by hosting three Fee-Free Weekends
this summer.
