Overview

Atwood Lake offers plenty of opportunities for boating and outdoor recreation at the reservoir located only a short drive from the metropolitan areas of Cleveland, Akron and Canton. Atwood lake is located on the Indian Fork of the Conotton Creek, 4 miles southeast of New Cumberland, Ohio, and 18 miles east of Dover, Ohio, in Tuscarawas County, on State Route 212. Atwood Lake was constructed primarily for flood control, recreation, fish and wildlife management. The Atwood Dam is a rolled earth fill with impervious core, 65 feet high, 3,700 feet long, with a top width of 30 feet, and a base width of 360 feet. The recreation facilities at Atwood Lake are administered by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District. Restrooms are provided at the Atwood Lake Day Use Area on a seasonal basis (April - October).

Activities

  • Boating

    Boating is a very popular activity at the lakes, with varying sizes and types of boats found on the lakes, especially from early spring through late fall each year. Sailboats, pontoon boats, fishing boats, canoes and kayaks are routinely sighted at the MWCD lakes. During the summer months and on summer weekends, the lakes can be filled with boats traveling up and down the individual lakes. A Public Launch ramp for the boating enthusiasts and fishermen is available near the Atwood Lake Dam year round.

  • Bicycling

    Bicycles are permitted on the state highways, and bicycle trails are located within the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District park.

  • Camping

    Atwood Lake has over 500 camp lots (class A with full hookups, class A and B with electric and primitive). Camping at Atwood Lake is available through Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District.

  • Fishing

    Fishing is permitted at the Atwood Lake Day Use Area and below the dam.

  • Hiking

    Limited hiking is available around Atwood Dam. A more extensive hiking trail system is available within Atwood Lake Park.

  • Hunting

    One of the more popular activities at the reservoir is hunting.The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) produces brochure maps that detail the general areas at its reservoirs that are open for public access for hunting. Specialized maps for more detail at reservoir locations are available for a fee from the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District main office at 1319 3rd St. NW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.

  • Picnicking

    Picnic sites are available at the Atwood Lake Day Use Area adjacent to the dam. Additional Picnic Site and Picnic Shelters are located within the Atwood Lake Park. For more information contact Atwood Lake Park Office at 330-343-6780.

  • RVing

    Atwood Lake campgrounds provide a swimming beach with a concession stand.

Driving

Atwood Lake is approximately 10 miles east of I-77. At I-77 take Exit 93 which is the Bolivar/Zoar - State Route 212 Exit. Take State Route 212 east until you cross Atwood Dam.
