Overview

Bear Creek Lake, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is less than 1 mile long and has an average depth of 48 feet. The lake drains an area of approximately 236 square miles. The multi-purpose pool measures 110-surface-acres and has a storage capacity of 2,000 acre-feet. The area aroung the lake, Bear Creek Lake Park offers an abundance of outdoor recreational and educational activities for visitors. The park has over 15 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding while it's three lakes provide opportunities for swimming, fishing and numerous water sports such as kayaking and sailboarding. Bear Creek Lake is also an great place to spend time camping with over 40 camping sites as well as yurts to enjoy the great outdoors. In the winter time, depending on weather conditions, winter sports such as cross-country skiing and ice fishing are available. The visitor center provides visitors with many exciting educational programs to learn about the nature and wildlife that inhabit the park. These programs which include Naturalist-led night hikes and campfire programs provide a fun and unique experiences for adults, children, school groups and organizations.

Activities

  • Boating

    Boating on Bear Creek Lake is limited to a motor size of 10hp or less. Big Soda Lake is limited to non-motorized craft. No private boats are permitted on Little Soda Lake.

  • Bicycling

    Paved trails available for biking.

  • Camping

    The Indian Paintbrush Campground is open April 1 through October 31 and is on a first come, first- served basis. Facilities include a water fill station, electric hook ups at all sites, showers and toilets and a central sanitation station. Group sites are also available.

  • Fishing

    Bear Creek Lake is open year round for fishing. Typically Bear Creek Lake is stocked once or twice a month, May through September, with rainbow trout, saugeye, small mouth bass, and yellow perch. One may catch an occasional tiger muskie or walleye as well. All Colorado State fishing and boating regulations apply. Boats are limited to 10 horsepower, no wake. Ice fishing is allowed when conditions permit.

  • Hiking

    There are 15-miles of dirt trails available for hiking that provide amazing views of the surrounding area.

  • Horseback Riding

    The majority of the 15-miles of multi-use dirt trails are open to horseback riders and include open meadows and creekside trails. A public horse arena is also available. Bear Creek Stables offers over 30 horses for use on the trails and provide activities such as nature rides, hay rides, lessons, summer camps and an evening ride. Stables are open April through October. Reservations are encouraged. Contact at 303-697-9666.

  • Picnicking

    Numerous picnic tables are located throughout the park and are on a first come, first- served basis. Five reservable picnic shelters of varying sizes are also available. Picnic shelter reservations may be made in person at the Bear Creek Lake Park Visitor Center or by phone. Payment is required at the time of reservation.   • RVing

    Full hookups (w-s-e) are available at all sites.

  • Water Sports

    The swimming beach at Big Soda Lake is open Memorial Day to Labor Day, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and offers a sandy beach for swimmers of all ages and abilities. Beach includes a lap swimming area, 2 beach volleyball courts, a playground, a concession stand, boat rentals, picnic sites and restrooms. Paddle boats, canoes, kayaks, and sailboards are availble for rental at the Soda Lakes Marina from Memorial Day to Labor Day. A water ski school is available at Little Soda Lake and is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Fees vary according to instruction.

  • Winter Sports

    Activities such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing are available depending on weather conditions.

Located just W of Denver near Morrison, on CO 8. Take C-470 to the Morrison Exit. Go east on Morrison Road for 1/4 mile to park entrance.
