Overview

Belton Lake is located on the Leon River 16.7 miles upstream of the confluence of the Leon River and the Little River. It is in the northern part of Bell County, Texas about three miles north of the City of Belton and approximately eight miles west of the City of Temple, Texas. There is 136 miles of shoreline at conservation pool. The Lake area lies within Bell and Coryell Counties. The purpose of the dam is for flood damage reduction, water conservation, fish and wildlife habitat, and general recreation.

Historical sites include the old "Charter Oak" on the Leon River, near the City of Belton, and the Stage Coach Inn in nearby Salado. Tour Miller Springs Nature Area located below Belton Dam. The nature area includes a hiking trail along the Leon River, a restored historic bridge, and several wildlife-viewing points. Belton Lake is located adjacent to the Fort Hood Army Base, which has several points of interest for the military buff. The mural painted on the spillway wall of Belton Dam depicts the history of the Bell County area.

    There are bike trails at Stillhouse Hollow Lake at Dana Peak Park.

  • Camping

    Cedar Ridge Park offers 68 sites that range from wooded to open for RV/tent camping each with water and electric hook-ups plus a covered table and grill. In addition to these campsites, eight screen shelters are located within the park for people who do not have camping equipment. Gate attendants and volunteer park hosts reside within the park to serve visitors needs. Cedar Ridge Park's facilities include restrooms with hot showers, camper service center for group parties/meeting, washer/dryer units; two multilane boat ramps with courtesy loading docks, large lighted fishing dock, designated family swimming beach, playground, basketball court, hiking trails and two trailer dump stations. Free Wireless internet is being offered to registered campers. The coverage is limited to use at the camper activity building located adjacent to the gatehouse. Campers must provide their own Wi-Fi capable computer to use the service. See the gatehouse for the password and more information. A concession marina is located in the park that offers fuel and basic convenience store items with a seasonal restaurant. Two group picnic areas (Sunset & Coveside) with electricity and water overlook Cedar Creek with its scenic white limestone bluffs which accommodate up to 100 people with horseshoe/volleyball courts and a large cooker. A group camping area (Turkey Roost) is also available with the same amenities plus 10 sites for RV/tent camping with electric/water for those large family/group gatherings.

    Live Oak Ridge Park offers 48 sites that range from wooded to open for RV/tent camping each with water and electric hook-ups plus a covered table and grill. . Live Oak Ridge Park's facilities include restrooms with hot showers, camper service center for group parties/meeting, washer/dryer units; a multilane boat ramps with courtesy loading dock, playground and trailer dump station. The spring time offers a large abundance of wild flowers that blanket areas of the park. Hiking trails are available adjacent to the park at Miller Springs Nature Area. Free Wireless internet is being offered to registered campers in Live Oak Ridge Park only.

    Westcliff Park has 26 RV/tent sites and 1 tent only site with water and electric and 4 primitive tent only sites. All of the sites have a covered table and a grill and lantern pole. Most of the sites are located along the shoreline close to the water. Gate attendants reside within the park to serve visitors needs. Facilities provided for the campers use include restrooms with hot showers, a two lane concrete boatramp, swimming beach, and playground.

    White Flint Park offers 13 campsites with water and 50 AMP electrical hookups with a covered table and grill for RV or tent camping, 12 screen shelter campsites, a multilane boat ramp, waterborne restroom and a dump station.

    Winkler Park has 14 sites for tent or RV camping with water hookups and a covered table. There is a restroom with showers for semi-primitive camping. The sites have a paved back in pad that will accommodate up to a 35' RV, although the park is frequented by tent campers who like to fish in the upper part of the lake. The park is a popular fishing camp and most winter campers come to fish for near record size Flathead Catfish (also called "yellow cats). Fees are paid at White Flint Park for first come first serve campers (Approximately 1 mile from this park).

  • Fishing

    Bank fishing is allowed around the lake except in restricted areas, swim beaches and boat ramps. There is a fishing dock in Temple's Lake Park with the cost of day use area fee. Frank's Marina in Belton Lakeview Park also provides fishing facilities for a cost. Please remember not to use the courtsey docks at the boat ramps as they are for loading and unloading boats only.

    Popular sports fish at Belton Lake are white bass, channel catfish, flathead or yellow catfish, crappie, and bluegills.

  • Hiking

    Miller Springs Nature Area - Located on FM 2271 just below Belton Lake Dam across from Live Oak Park on 266 acres of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property. Miller Springs Nature Center is open to the self-guided public from dawn to dusk each day of the year. A map of Miller Springs and a month-by-month chart of "What's in Bloom" are located near the parking area. For additional information contact the park staff.

  • Hunting

    Hunting is allowed for dove, quail, squirrel, rabbits and waterfowl from September 1 through March 30 as published in Texas Outdoor Annual for these counties.

  • Picnicking

    Temple's Lake Park- This is a day use park that has 62 picnic sites with excellent water access, a swimming beach, restrooms with showers, two 2 lane concrete boat ramps, basketball court, volleyball court, group pavilion (Temple's Lake Pavilion), and playground for the kids.

    Owl Creek Park- This park has 10 picnic/tent camping sites with excellent shade, restrooms and a two lane concrete boat ramp. The sites do not have hook-ups. Potable water is available at a central location within the park.

    Westcliff Park- This park has 11 picnic sites, a swimming beach, restrooms, and boat ramp available for day users. Also within this park are 27 campsites with water and electric hook ups and 4 tent only sites.

    Miller Springs Park- This area has 5 picnic/camping sites with excellent shade and access to the Leon River immediately below the Belton Dam. Water and electric is not available in this area. The park is known for good fishing following the release of water from the lake. Swimming is not recommended due to the hazardous currents and sudden fluctuations in the water level. Vault restrooms are located within the park.

    Iron Bridge Park- This park has 5 picnic/tent camping sites. Water and electric is not available in this area. The park has a two lane concrete boat ramp for launching small watercraft. This ramp is extremely shallow and boats larger that 14 foot flat bottom are not able to launch at this ramp. Vault restrooms are provided within the park.

    Belton Lakeview Park- This park has several covered and open picnic tables overlooking Belton Lake. Franks Pavilion is located in the park and the park has a playground, restrooms and a two lane boat ramp.

  • Water Sports

    Temple's Lake Park- This is a day use park that has 60 picnic sites with excellent water access, a swimming beach, restrooms with showers, basketball court, volleyball court, group pavilion and playground for the kids.

    Westcliff Park- This park has 11 picnic sites, a swimming beach with a playground and restrooms.

    *Swimming is only recommended at designated locations. Swimming, wading, snorkeling or scuba diving at one's own risk is permitted, except at launching sites, designated mooring points and public docks, or other areas so designated by the District Commander. An international diver down, or inland diving flag must be displayed during underwater activities. Diving, jumping or swinging from trees, bridges or other structures which cross or are adjacent to project waters is prohibited. Be safe wear a Life Jacket!!

Westcliff Park: From IH-35, take 6th Ave, then proceed West, 2 miles, to Main Street (SH317). Go North, on Main, 3 miles to FM 439 and then West on 439, 6 miles to Sparta Road.
