Chisos Basin Campground

The 60-site Chisos Basin Campground is rugged and hilly. The sites are small and most are not suited to recreational vehicles or trailers. The road to the Basin is steep and curvy, especially at Panther Pass?the road?s highest point. The road into the campground is a 15 percent grade. Trailers longer than 20 feet and RVs longer than 24 feet are not recommended. Elevation-5,400 feet.

Directions from Alpine, TX: State Route 118 to the west entrance.Alternatively, there are two other paved roads leading into the park.Take U.S. 385 from Marathon, TX to the north entrance; or take Ranch Road 170 from Presidio to Study Butte, and then State Route 118 to the west entrance.There is no public transportation to or from the park. Amtrak serves Alpine, TX, 108 miles to the north. Bus service is available to Alpine and Marathon. The nearest airports are in Midland, TX (230 miles to the northeast), and El Paso, TX (325 miles to the northwest).
