AVAILABILITY Gird Point Lookout is available from approximately July 1st to October 1st.
SETTING This lookout has been restored to reflect a lookout of the 1940's. It offers beautiful views of the Sapphire Mountains to the east and the Bitterroot Mountains to the west. During the late evening hours the views of Hamilton, MT from the lookout are spectacular. The Lookout is approximately 11 airmiles east of Hamilton, MT.
CONSIDERATIONS/ ATTRACTIONS Gird Point Lookout is a 14? x 14? one room facility with a 30" catwalk all the way around. It sits appoximately 10' off the ground. The lookout is equipped with a wood burning stove for heating, firewood that will need to be split (axe provided), a two-burner propane cookstove , and a coleman lantern. You will need to provide your own propane for the cookstove and the lantern and water for drinking, cooking and cleaning. The cabin is furnished with dishes and utensils for four, cooking pots and pans. There are two beds which can sleep two people each. You will need to provide your own mattress and bedding. Additional ammenities include an outside toilet. Pack it in - Pack it out.
DIRECTIONS Gird Point Lookout is located east of Hamilton, MT. Take State Highway 38 (Skalkaho Hwy) for approximately 7 miles. Turn north onto Forest road #714 (Gird Rd.). Follow this road for approximately 13 miles until you reach the Gird Point Lookout Trailhead. From the Trailhead it is a moderate 1 mile hike to the lookout. Approximate driving time from Hwy 93 to Gird Point is 2 hours.
ACCESS Seasonal. Forest road #714 is a narrow mountain road. Please use caution when driving to the trailhead.
DIFFICULTY A moderate hike suitable for many ages.
