SETTING This historic Ranger Station consists of seven buildings and is still used today by Forest Service Trail Crews and Wilderness Rangers. The ?Ranger?s House? is available to the public. It is a two-story, five-room log building.
CONSIDERATIONS/ ATTRACTIONS The Magruder Ranger's House features two bedrooms with two single beds/mattresses and two double beds/mattresses. There is a wood stove in the basement that heats the cabin efficiently (firewood provided). The kitchen is furnished with a propane stove/oven for cooking, a propane refrigerator, furniture, dishes, utensils, cooking pots and pans. As an added bonus, during the non-winter months, hot and cold running water is available as well as an indoor bathroom. External features include a picnic table and outhouse. The Magruder Ranger's House is located between the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness allowing for great hiking and spectating. Pack it in - Pack it out.
DIRECTIONS The house is located approximately 70 miles southwest of Hamilton, MT and 68 miles east of Red River, ID. It is located along Magruder Road #468.
ACCESS From June - October the house is usually accessible by high clearance vehicles and pickup trucks. This road is primitive, one-lane, rough, steep and winding. From December - February there is only snowmobile or ski access from the snowmobile trailheads at Little West Fork and Red River Ranger Station.
DIFFICULTY Be aware that hazardous conditions exist during the winter season and there is not running water during the winter months.
