Celebrate National Trails Day

National Trails DayThe United States has more than 200,000 miles of trails. These pathways bring you close to nature, offer breathtaking scenic views and make you appreciate the environment. Following trails is a good workout and rewarding experience that can be a fun group outing or a solitary journey. Take advantage of these opportunities during the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day® on Saturday, June 2. National Trails Day is the only nationwide celebration of trails. It’s a day to enjoy the trails and recognize the hard work, time and commitment people and organizations invest into maintaining trails for public recreation.

National Trails Day stems from a 1987 Commission on Americans Outdoors from President Ronald Reagan. President Regan hoped that all Americans could easily access trails near their homes. This sentiment became known as Trails for All Americans. The American Hiking Society launched National Trails Day a few years later to help fulfill that goal.

All 50 states (and thousands of people!) participate in the event each year and offer a variety of programs. Activities for National Trails Day include hiking, biking, birding, wildlife photography, trail running, kid-friendly programs and more.
