White Mountain National Forest Quarter Commences 2013 Releases

The first of the 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters was released into circulation on January 28. White Mountain National Forest is depicted on the 16th quarter of the series, which feature designs devoted to National Parks and other iconic public lands.

The newest quarter was designed by Phebe Hemphill. Mount Chocorua, the easternmost peak of the Sandwich Range, serves as the highlight of the design. Chocorua is flanked by birch trees in the picture. An official release ceremony will be held on February 21 at Plymouth State University’s Hanaway Theatre at 10:30 a.m. in Plymouth, New Hampshire.

White Mountain National Forest is primarily located in New Hampshire though a small portion of it is in Maine. In total, the land is 800,000 acres, equal to 80 percent of the size of Rhode Island. With such a massive amount of land, nearly 60 million U.S. residents live within a days drive of its border. Additionally, 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail run through White Mountain National Forest and help to attract 6 million annual visitors.

Though Mount Chocorua is the focus of the quarter, Mount Washington is actually the highest peak of the land and the highest peak north of the Smoky Mountains and east of the Mississippi River. Washington is a part of the Presidential Range and is joined by Mt. Madison, Adams, Jefferson and Monroe.
