Gear Review: TevaSphere Athletic Shoes

TevaSphere men's shoeIt seems as if outdoor gear technology is evolving at around the same pace as the opportunities for athletic racing events are expanding. This is great news for outdoor adventurers and athletes, and whether we’re just casual trail joggers or competitive mud runners, it’s exciting to try out new gear designed especially for our sport of choice.

One of the latest pieces of specialty gear to hit the market is the TevaSphere by Teva. The shoes feature a first-of-its-kind spherical heel and pod-arch system, offering a more natural point of impact, efficient transition and superior stability on varied terrain.

The TevaSphere design stands in stark contrast to bulkier, squared-off heels and cushioned soles of other athletic shoes but still offers support while cutting down on braking that normally occurs when squared-off heels hit the ground. The spherical heel and support pods help a heel-striking runner make the most of their stride without forcing them to change the way they run.

As a heel-striker myself, I was looking forward to giving these rounded-heel shoes a try. I’ve been running in them for a few months and have been able to significantly cut down my average run times. In fact, since I started wearing my TevaSpheres, I’ve shaved nearly a minute of my average per-mile pace. It may also have something to do with a new running route, or nice, cool spring weather, but regardless, the shoes feel good and so do I. The rounded heels and stability pods took some getting used to, and I did a few short runs to adjust to the new shoes. But once my muscles were used to the new shoe, I felt faster and less tired during runs.

The shoes come in a variety of styles and colors, with designs made specifically for road or trail running. Waterproof versions are also available.
