Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial Quarter Released

On April 2, the United States Mint launched the second quarter in the 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Program. This unique quarter features Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Site, located near Put-in-Bay, Ohio.

This memorial site was established to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace among Britain, Canada and the U.S. The memorial, a Doric column rising 352 feet over Lake Erie, is situated five miles from the longest undefended border in the world. The memorial bears the name of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry, the “Hero of Lake Erie.”

The quarter depicts the statue of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry in front of the Peace Memorial, located in the distance. Inscriptions are PERRY'S VICTORY, OHIO, 2013 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. This depiction was developed by design candidates who worked in consultation with representatives of Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial.

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial is the most dominant feature of the Lake Erie Islands. Interred beneath the rotunda floor are the remains of the three American and three British officers who were killed during the Battle of Lake Erie. Carved in the rotunda walls are the names of Perry's vessels along with the names of the Americans who were killed or wounded in the battle. It was first established as a national site on March 3, 1919. The site is celebrating its bicentennial, and visitors may find a complete schedule of the year’s festivities at the National Park Service website.

On April 20, the public and the media were invited to join officials from the United States Mint and the National Park Service at the launch ceremony for the new America the Beautiful Quarters Program coin honoring Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Site. The audience was addressed by Senator Brown and enjoyed a special coin presentation to children.
