Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge Fishing and Hunting

The regulations listed below supplement Louisiana State hunting and fishing regulations and the general regulations governing hunting and fishing on National Wildlife Refuges set forth in Title 50, Code of Federal Regulations.

Attached to this permit is a self check, harvest form. The harvest data helps us better manage your wildlife resources. Please report all harvest information and return it to the brochure box at lock 1 or to refuge office.

All hunters must possess a refuge permit. This brochure when signed and in your possession, serves as a permit for all 2008-2009 refuge hunts.

Firearms are permitted only during the refuge hunting season. The possession of slugs, buckshot, or rifle and pistol ammunition larger than .22 caliber rimfire is permitted only during the refuge gun, deer hunts. The possession of toxic shot during small game hunts is prohibited.

Firearms, while being carried in vehicles or boats, must be unloaded and encased or dismantled. Possession of a loaded firearm in a campsite, on a refuge road open to vehicle travel, or on a designated walking trail is prohibited.

Hunting within 150 feet of any road, residence, or the designated walking trail is prohibited.

Temporary tree stands may be erected on the refuge starting 14 days prior to refuge deer season and must be removed by 14 days following the end of the refuge deer season. Hunting from a permanent tree stand or from a
tree in which a metal object (such as nails, spikes, screws) has been driven is prohibited. All unattended hunting stands must be legibly tagged with the user?s name, address, phone # and big game license # (lifetime license #). All untagged stands are subject to forfeiture or seizure.

The use or possession of alcoholic beverages while hunting is prohibited.

The use of horses and all terrain vehicles are prohibited.

All commercial activities including guiding or participating in a guided hunt are prohibited.

Target shooting on the refuge is prohibited.

Houseboats are prohibited within refuge boundaries except for navigational purposes.

Motorized vehicles are only permitted on public roads and designated parking areas.

Hunting from the east levee of the Pearl River Canal is prohibited.

Any hunter under 16 years of age must possess proof of completing an approved Hunter Safety Course and be accompanied by an adult 21 years of age. Each adult can supervise only one youth during big game hunts and no more than two youths during other hunts. Parents or adult
guardians responsible for supervising hunters under the age of 16 must remain within sight and normal voice contact of the juvenile. Parents or adult guardians are responsible for ensuring that hunters under the age of 16 do not engage
in conduct that would constitute a violation of the refuge regulations.

All hunters except waterfowl hunters must wear 400 square inches of unbroken Hunter Orange as the outermost layer of clothing on the chest and back during open gun seasons for deer. All non-hunters are encouraged to wear hunter
orange during gun deer seasons.

The refuge will be closed to all hunting, except waterfowl, when the Pearl River reaches 15.5 feet on the gauge at Pearl River. Call 985/649 0357 for current reading.

The possession or distribution of bait or hunting with the aid of bait, including any grain, salt, mineral, other feed, or nonnaturally occurring attractant on the refuge is prohibited.

Specific Sport Fishing Regulations
Recreational fishing is permitted year-round in accordance with State Regulations subject to the following conditions. Commercial fishing is prohibited.

Limb lines are permitted but must be 100% cotton.

Trotlines are permitted, but the last five feet of the trotline, on both ends, must be 100% cotton.

The fishing pond at the Pearl River Turnaround is open except closed from April-June. Non-gas powered boats may be hand launched when open.

Specific Hunting Regulations
State hunting regulations apply unless otherwise listed. When the refuge follows State seasons (as listed below); those refuge lands in Mississippi follow Mississippi State seasons and those refuge lands in Louisiana follow Louisiana State seasons.

Directions

From the Louisiana Side: To reach the southern tip of the refuge, take I-59 to Pearl River Turnaround Exit 11. Heading east from this exit takes you to a fishing area, turning west will take you toward the Holmes Bayou Trail. The Refuge can also be accessed from Locks 1, 2, & 3 by taking Highway 41 north of Slidell.

Mississippi Side: To reach the furthermost East side of the Refuge, take I-59 North to Picayune, MS. Take HWY 43 to Walkiah Bluff Water Park or to Dumas Wise Road to access the Refuge.
