Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve State Natural Reserve

The poppies are gone for the year but there are some wildflowers that bloom in other seasons; check the Research Notes for periodic updates. We had a fantastic poppy season this spring, which was a relief after two years of drought when the wildflower season was over before it began. We will not be able to predict the intensity or duration of the next poppy season until as late as February, but the season generally lasts from Mid-March to Mid-May. Wildlife includes gliding hawks, singing meadow larks, lots of side-bloched lizards zipping across the trail, gopher snakes and rattlesnakes. If you're lucky, you may spot a coyote or bobcat. The natural spring on the North Poppy Trail, now only moist soil, is surrounded by rabbit brush which makes it a good place to sit quietly and watch for wildlife. Numerous burrows around the trails may house mice, gophers, kangaroo rats, beetles, scorpions, or snakes that have taken them over.
