Overview

Canfield Lake NWR is one of six easement refuges administered by Long Lake NWR Complex. It is primarily privately owned, with 3 acres owned in fee. The refuge easement grants perpetual flooding and restricts entry. The refuge centers on a 3-400 acre glacial lake which attracts concentrations of several thousand geese (Canadas, whitefronts and snows) and concentrations of several hundred ducks (both divers and dabblers). Adjacent to this refuge is Basaraba WPA which consists of several hundred acres of tall dense tamegrass cover and interspersed wetlands. The refuge portion of this management Complex is closed to hunting. Because of the Complex nature of this arrangement of lands, the area provides some unique management opportunities combining the management focus of both Refuges and Waterfowl Production Areas.
