This four-wheel drive road begins from the main park road immediately west of the Needles Visitor Center. It leads northward for one and a quarter miles to Salt Creek. The roadway follows the Salt Creek drainage for another two miles before crossing it. This turning point is known as Lower Jump Overlook, which provides a glimpse into the Salt Creek Canyon narrows. The difficulty of the drive is relatively moderate up to this point. It becomes more difficult from here to the Colorado River overlook.
From Lower Jump overlook the roadway crosses the creek drainage and leads north avoiding the canyon of Salt Creek. The trail crosses a tributary of Salt Creek as it winds its way westward toward the Colorado River. The last mile and a half of this drive is the most technical. It requires an experienced four-wheel driver that can navigate loose rock and stair-step drops. There is room for parking on the side of the roadway for those individuals who choose to walk the last mile and a half. There is no camping permitted along the Colorado Overlook Road.
Directions from Needles Visitor Center: Colorado Overlook Road leads north from the main park road immediately west of the visitor center.
