As far as I know, the salts are similar to that which you'd use in a home well water softener system, and should be harmless when in contact with bare skin, wet or dry.

At this time of year, I doubt you'd want to go barefoot, air temperatures of 90+ degrees can create very hot ground temps, possibly enough to cause fairly serious burns. Also, the crusty salt would probably be pretty jagged and hard on barefeet.

The Salt Lake City office of the BLM also advises, on vehicles or on foot, to avoid the outer edges of the salt flats when conditions are wet, both to preserve the ecosystem and prevent you from getting stuck in the mud.

The Lamar Valley is known for its great abundance of wildlife. It is one of the warmest places in Yellowstone but is not a geothermal area, making it safe for the diverse animals who live there. To find the sites of thermal activity in the park or to learn more about the natural wonders of Yellowstone, please visit the National Park Service's webpage on Yellowstone National Park.

The Lamar Ranger station was previously the residence of Ranger Brown, but now serves as a center for emergency visitor services. And yes, the waters in Yellowstone National Park are warmer because of thermal activity from geysers and hot springs. To learn more about the park, read our online description of Yellowstone National Park or use the Oh, Ranger! ParkFinder app to gather more information.

The park does offer guided tours. Call the Barton Warnock Enviornmental Education Center at 432-424-3327 for more information. There are no specific guides for the Solitario; however, the parks website (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/big-bend-ranch) does offer maps and trail guides with information pertaining to hiking all the trails within the park.

Hi Peg,

Our best advice is to check the Shuttle Bus Routes page on Rocky Mountain National Park's website. If you need additional information, call the park's visitor Information line at 970-586-1206 (daily 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mountain Time, recorded information after hours).
