Lena Lake Campground is located on the western shore of the lake and contains 29 backcountry campsites. Fire rings and a composting toilet are available, however potable water is not and all water used for consumption should be treated. No fees are required at the campground but a Northwest Forest Pass is required to park a vehicle at trailheads. Lena Lake is a very popular recreation site for visitors to the Olympic National Forest so please be careful and practice Leave No Trace!

For complete rules and regulations contact Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (360) 902-2500.

The weather at Glacier National Park should be very nice in early September, but a bit chilly at night.  Highs are typically in the high 60's, and lows can be under 40 depending on where you are.  This link can help you plan for other times of the year as well.  (click here)

This is a question we get a lot (for all parks).  In Yosemite, there is cell reception in the Valley for some carriers and in some eastern parts of the park.  There is almost no reception reported on any backcountry trails.

If you're interested, click here to read recent news and discussions about cell phone use and plans for new towers in national parks.

Cell coverage in Yosemite Valley can be spotty but we have found it easy to get a signel in the area around Yosemite Lodge.  Hint: point your cell phone antenna towards Sentinel Rock. There are only limited areas in the back country that have cell coverage.  Coverage disappears the further away  you get from Yosemite Valley and the roads into the valley.

The Special Maps Issue of Backpacker magazine that came out in May has a map of Yosemite and where the cell coverage is.  It can be found on page 34.

Tuolomne Meadows is a very special part of Yosemite National Park and well worth the drive.  You should probably allow 2-3 hours to make the drive from the South Entrance (and the Mariposa Groves) up to the Tuolomne high country.  The drive can be done more quickly, but to be safe and enjoy the surroundings definitely build in the extra time.  Keep in mind, there is a trail store up at Tuolomne if you should need any supplies.
