A North Carolina man is facing charges for allegedly shooting a bull elk inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. GSMNP spokesman Bob Miller said rangers found a bull carcass around 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13. It was lying along the edge of a pasture in the Cataloochee area of Haywood County, North Carolina.

That's a tough question to answer. Bears, which are omnivorous, are not natural hibernators. If there's a sufficient food supply—berries, insects, nuts, carrion— they'll stay active all winter. Approximately 1,500 bears live in the park (approximately two per square mile) and they inhabit all elevations. That said, it's more likely that you'll see bears at this time of year because the lush foliage common during the summer has thinned substantially. That holds true for Elk, too, which generally stay within Cataloochee year round.

This summer was especially wet, and recent heavy rains should ensure that waterfalls are running strong… so don't forget your camera!

Safe travels!

-->With winter beginning to grip Rocky Mountain National Park, National Park Service researchers are beginning a five-month survey of the park's elk population, which has been decreasing during the past decade or so.

Visitors to northern Yellowstone National Park have been filing a lot fewer unusual auto damage claims during this fall's elk mating season compared to recent years. The reason is last winter's demise of elk No. 6, a large bull with sprawling antlers that was famous for attacking tourists' cars in the Mammoth area while strutting his stuff during mating season. No. 6 caused thousands of dollars in damage to cars over the years and even attacked two tourists, knocking one down and causing the other to need stitches.

Planes and helicopters will fly over Rocky Mountain National Park over the next five months to estimate the number of elk in a herd that park officials want to cull. A plane and helicopter will fly at different altitudes to enhance the monitoring. The National Park Service and the U.S. Geological Survey are working together on the study. Park officials have a 20-year plan that includes using sharpshooters to cull the herd. They want to thin the herd because overgrazing by elk has nearly wiped out aspens and willows — prime habitat for beavers and birds.

Nineteen elk calves were born this year in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and 16 survived. Park officials said it's been one of the best years yet for increasing the herd. There are now about 110 elk in the park, divided about evenly among males and females. Additionally, officials said the bulls this year have impressive antlers, which may mean that there is good forage available for the elk.
