Yosemite offers great opportunities for fly fishing! There are 58 permanent streams with a combined length of 770 miles, a multitude of mountain lakes and excellent rainbow and brown trout keepers. Some great fishing tips are available at yosemitegold.com and sierraflyfisher.com.

The Yosemite Fishing Season
The Yosemite fishing season for stream and river fishing begins on the last Saturday in April and continues through November 15 with the exception of Frog Creek near Lake Eleanor, opening June 15. All lakes and reservoirs are open to fishing year-round.

Where to Go
Fishing in Yosemite is usually best at lower elevations. Expect to enjoy good fishing all summer and into the winter on the Wild & Scenic Merced River. A particularly successful spot for trout fishing is the stretch of the Tuolumne River above Hetch Hetchy. The Yosemite Village Sport Shop in Yosemite Valley sells all the equipment and gear you'll need for your fishing adventure.

Regulations & Licenses
Be certain to read through and follow the NPS Regulations. All persons 16 years of age and older must have a valid California sport fishing license for fishing in Yosemite National Park. For information about licenses and fishing, inquire at the park's visitor centers. Special catch and release regulations apply for native rainbow trout caught in the Merced River from Happy Isles downstream to the Foresta Bridge. You may use only artificial lures or flies with barbless hooks. Bait fishing is prohibited.

Licenses can be purchased at:

Gear Review: Osprey Aura 65 Pack

August 5, 2010, 12:33 pm
by Leyla Heckrotte Among many naturalists of the past and present, John Muir knew well that wild places are essential to the health of human beings. “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity...” he wrote ...

Yes, Bright Angel Bicycles at Grand Canyon village offers hourly and daily rentals ($10 an hour or $35 for the day) as well as bicycle tours led by their staff.

The site says they offer reservations for "large groups", but single rentals or small groups are first come, first served.

If you call, they should also be able to advise you on which trails are open to cyclists, and which are not (most are not, as I recall) so you can plan your outing.

Great Summer Gear

July 28, 2010, 8:04 am
Of all of the seasons, summer is the cure that many of us eagerly await after spending long, dark months in winter’s cocoon. It’s not just the good weather that makes us happier in the summer, it’s all of the things that the warmer weather brings—baseball, fresh corn, ripe ...

Personally, I think Late September - October is the best time to hike in and around the canyon.  Rim to Rim takes a good while so you'll want plenty of daylight and pleasant temperatures.

October to March, unless you like over 100 degree heat. Or start very early in the morning, get to Phantom Ranch, hang out all day, then hike out in the evening. Average time for a R2R is 6 hours. Its 14 miles from the North Rim to the Colorado River and 9 miles up to the South Rim. There is a 5000 foot drop into the canyon. Hiking down is easy, but the hike out if you are not in shape can be hard. Take plenty of water, stop often and take your time.
