Hi Ron,

Thanks for reaching out to us! Rockhounding - the collecting of small rocks or mineral specimens from the surface, for personal use - on the Black Hills National Forest does not require a permit. Collecting from within historical sites on the Forest is not allowed. Please do not disturb historical sites; leave them as is, for future visitors to enjoy.

Contact the Black Hills National Forest specialists at (605) 673-9200 for more information!

The park does offer guided tours. Call the Barton Warnock Enviornmental Education Center at 432-424-3327 for more information. There are no specific guides for the Solitario; however, the parks website (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/big-bend-ranch) does offer maps and trail guides with information pertaining to hiking all the trails within the park.

Hi Peg,

Our best advice is to check the Shuttle Bus Routes page on Rocky Mountain National Park's website. If you need additional information, call the park's visitor Information line at 970-586-1206 (daily 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mountain Time, recorded information after hours).
