It was 10 years ago that the Black Canyon of the Gunnison transformed into a national park, giving it a status that would bring thousands of people throughout the world to visit its spectacular gorges for recreation, education and solitude.Though the Black Canyon has been protected since the 1930s as a national monument, there was more involved in the "park" status than just a simple name change. Deep in the heart of the Mojave National Preserve in California stands a five foot cross carefully disguised in a plywood box.The U.S. Park Service was forced to cover the cross until the Supreme Court decides whether the cross can remain in its place as a monument to fallen soldiers during World War I, or whether it must come down because its presence violates the Constitution. The case is the latest in a recent flurry of challenges to religious symbols placed on public property.

Then there's the daunting geography. Visitors can reach the remote Molokai peninsula by air - two flights a day on a nine-seat aircraft - or by mule or on foot down a harrowing trail from the top of the 2,000-foot sea cliffs.

It's 138 miles from the Wawona entrance of Yosemite National Park to Sequoia National Park. You should allow 2 hours and 45 minutes for the drive. You can find directions and route options here. The National Park Service also provides directions here.
The main park road, the Generals Highway, connects the entrances of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. This road is about 60 miles and takes about 2.5 hours to travel. A great map of the local roads is available here.
The drive from Kings Canyon to Napa Valley is about 295 miles. Directions and route options are available here.
