Spring plowing is underway on the Going-to-the-Sun Road at Glacier National Park.

As of this morning, June 21, there are 41.5 miles of the Going-to-the-Sun Road open for travel. Visitors can drive 28 miles from the West Entrance to Big Bend, and 13.5 miles from the St. Mary Entrance to Jackson Glacier Overlook. The section of the road between Big Bend and Jackson Glacier Overlook is closed due to snow plowing operations.

Updated road conditions for the Going-to-the-Sun Road, and all other roads at Glacier National Park is available at the NPS Glacier Road Status site.

There are currently 26 glaciers at Glacier National Park. You can see them from various viewpoints throughout the park. The Grinnell Glacier is reachable during the summer months via a steep trail in the eastern section of the park.

The USGS maintains a detailed list of the glaciers in the park.

Not for kayaking. You need a permit for a motorized vehicle.

Boat launching ramps are available on Bowman and McDonald Lakes on the west side of Glacier, as well as Swiftcurrent, Two Medicine, and St. Mary Lakes on the east side of the park.

Canoes or rafts can be carried to many smaller waters.

Hand-propelled boats and sailboats are permitted on park waters with the following exception: from April 1 through September 30, the section of Upper McDonald Creek between Mineral Creek and Lake McDonald is closed to all types of boating and floating to protect nesting Harlequin ducks.

In Glacier, is there a firewood size limit (18"?) and that it must fit under the grate, or can the grate be used as a backstop for the fire?

Fires must be kept inside fire grates and attended all times. Be sure your fire is dead out when leaving for any reason.
