May is a great time to visit Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park. While the weather can be unpredictable and temperatures can fluctuate dramatically, it is conveniently sandwiched between peak winter and summer seasons which means great hotel deals abound.

If you are planning on exploring the park, you should consider staying in Jackson Lake Lodge, which is centrally located in the park and offers easy access to most areas that you'll want to visit AND is the jumping off point for many tours, ranger-led activities and other activities.

If you planning on enjoying the sites and sounds of Jackson and Teton Village, I recommend the following, which all had rates of $190/night and less:

Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole - treat yourself with five star luxury at the fraction of its regular price. Located in Teton Village, offers easy access to the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, downtown Jackson and the park.

Hotel Terra - a beautifully designed, luxurious green hotel located in Teton village.

Hotel Wort - The elegant and historic Wort Hotel  is located one half block from the town square, in the heart of Jackson Hole. Take a step back in history and stay here.

Depending on your dates of travel, the Parkway Inn & Spa offered a great deal at $120.00 night. Ditto the Wyoming Inn of Jackson.

One last recommendation, you can probably get a great deal on a condo or townhouse, especially if you are traveling a big group. Give a call to the good folks at Rendezvous Mountain Rental at 888.739.256.

Good luck, have a great time, and remember to drive slowly… there are lots of animals.

I'm coming to the Grand Tetons April 5-8 and am interested in sleigh rides as well as observing the wildlife.  I also plan on going to Yellowstone Park.  I'm from northern Indiana, so the cold weather and snow won't bother me.  How are the main roads as well as the snow amounts?  Are the temps in the low to mid 30s?

Grand Tetons National Park generally only offers guided snowshoeing tours through the end of March. If there is enough snow it is possible the park may extend their tours. Please call (307) 739-3399 or for more information. You can also visit the following website for more information on cross country skiing and snowshoeing in Grand Tetons.

Sleigh rides are offered in the surrounding communities like Jackson Hole. The following sites are links to several concessioners who provide these services. You will have to check with them to determine whether or not they will still be offering these tours.

As far as average temperatures go in both Yellowstone and Grand Teton, you can generally expect temperatures to range from 20 to 40 degrees. Be prepared for some snow. Yellowstone averages roughly 6 inches of snow in April, while Grand Tetons averages 23 inches.

Most of the major roads outside the park are plowed. For status update on roads within the parks please follow the links below or call the following numbers:

- In Yellowstone check http://www.nps.gov/yell/conditions.htm or call (307) 344-2117

- In Grand Teton check www.nps.gov/grte/planyourvisit/roads.htm or call (307) 739-3614

Use Caution When Driving in the Tetons

February 9, 2010, 9:19 am
Despite a four-year education campaign, visitors to Grand Teton National Park continue to collide with wildlife on park roads. Each year, Grand Teton National Park collects comprehensive data on the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions occurring on park roads. This information is used to examine trends and patterns in an effort ...
