The park is spread over a 48-mile section of the Chattahoochee River and consists of 16 different areas or units beginning at the below the Lake Lanier dam in Forsyth County and ending at Peachtree Creek in Fulton County, in metro Atlanta.

The table below provides a listing of the various areas available for you to visit starting at the northern most unit and then working toward the south end of the park.

Jones Bridge

Jones Bridge is a popular place for fishing and hiking. The trail parallels the river and connects to the area surrounding the Chattahoochee River Environmental Education Center.

Directions

From I-85 North

  • Take exit 99, Jimmy Carter Boulevard, GA 140.
  • Left and travel for 5.5 miles.
  • Cross the river and go 1-mile to Barnwell Road.
  • Right on Barnwell Road and 1.6 miles to the unit, which will be on the right.

From I-85 South

  • Take exit 99, Jimmy Carter Boulevard, GA 140.
  • Right and travel for 5.5 miles.
  • Cross the river and go 1-mile to Barnwell Road.
  • Right on Barnwell Road and 1.6 miles to the unit, which will be on the right.

From GA 400 North

  • Take exit 7A, Holcomb Bridge/Norcross, GA 140 East.
  • Go 4.1 miles through the intersection of Holcomb Bridge and Nesbitt Ferry Road to the junction of Barnwell Road.
  • Left about1.6 miles to the unit, which will be on the right.

From GA 400 South

  • Take exit 7A, Holcomb Bridge/Norcross, GA 140 East.
  • Left and go for 4.1 miles through the intersection of Holcomb Bridge and Nesbitt Ferry Road to the junction of Barnwell Road.
  • Left about 1.6 miles to the unit, which will be on the right.

Columns Drive

Columns Drive is part of the Cochran Shoals Area and includes a three mile fitness trail which is also excellent for bird watching and wetlands exploration via a shaded boardwalk.

From I-285 East

  • Take exit 24, Riverside Drive.
  • Left for 2.3 miles to Johnson Ferry Road
  • Go left, cross the Chattahoochee and take an immediate right onto Columns Drive.
  • Stay on Columns Drive for about 2.6 miles, which will end at the unit.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 24, Riverside Drive.
  • Right for 2.3 miles to Johnson Ferry Road
  • Go left, cross the Chattahoochee and take an immediate right onto Columns Drive.
  • Stay on Columns Drive for about 2.6 miles, which will end at the unit.

From GA 9 North (Roswell Road)

  • Take Roswell Road to Johnson Ferry Road.
  • Left onto Johnson Ferry Road go about 2.2 miles.
  • Cross the Chattahoochee River and take an immediate left onto Columns Drive.
  • Stay on Columns Drive for about 2.6 miles, which will end at the unit.

From GA 9 South (Roswell Road)

  • Take Roswell Road to Johnson Ferry Road.
  • Right onto Johnson Ferry Road go about 2.2 miles.
  • Cross the Chattahoochee River and take an immediate left onto Columns Drive.
  • Stay on Columns Drive for about 2.6 miles, which will end at the unit.

Interstate North

The Cochran Shoals area is one of the largest and most popular in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. It is an excellent place to bike or walk along the river. There is a three mile fitness trail that is also excellent for birdwatching and wetlands discovery.

From I-285 East

  • Take exit 22, Northside Drive, New Northside Drive, Powers Ferry Road.
  • Go to second traffic light and go left onto New Northside Drive.
  • Use "through" lane to pick up Interstate North Parkway.
  • Unit will be .8 miles on the right after crossing the Chattahoochee.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 22, Northside Drive, New Northside Drive, Powers Ferry Road.
  • Right on New Northside Drive.
  • Use "through" lane to pick up Interstate North Parkway.
  • Unit will be .8 miles on the right after crossing the Chattahoochee.

From U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway North)

  • Travel to Akers Mill Road
  • Travel for about 1.5 miles to the junction of Akers Mill and Powers Ferry Road.
  • Left and go under I-285, then an immediate right onto Interstate North Parkway.
  • Unit will be .2 miles on left prior to crossing the Chattahoochee.

From U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway South)

  • Travel to Akers Mill Road
  • Travel for about 1.5 miles to the junction of Akers Mill and Powers Ferry Road.
  • Left and go under I-285, then an immediate right onto Interstate North Parkway.
  • Unit will be .2 miles on left prior to crossing the Chattahoochee.

Johnson Ferry North

Johnson Ferry North has 2.5 miles of trails that are excellent for viewing plants and wildlife. There is a boat launch and a covered pavilion that is a great place to relax after a hike.

  • Take exit 24, Riverside Drive.
  • Left for 2.3 miles to Johnson Ferry Road.
  • Left, then cross the river and an immediate right into the unit.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 24, Riverside Drive.
  • Right for 2.3 miles to Johnson Ferry Road.
  • Left, then cross the river and an immediate right into the unit.

From GA 9 North, Roswell Road to Johnson Ferry Road

  • Right onto Johnson Ferry Road, go 2.2 miles
  • Cross the river and take immediate right into the unit.

From GA 9 South, Roswell Road to Johnson Ferry Road

  • Left onto Johnson Ferry Road, go 2.2 miles
  • Cross the river and take immediate right into the unit.

Island Ford

Island Ford is the location of the Park Headquarters and Visitor Contact Station and also has some great trails. You can stroll along the river for about a mile and might catch a glimpse of a deer or fox when walking along the hills that line the river in this section of the park. There is also a canoe launch where one can stop mid-float to see the Visitor Contact Station or have a picnic.

  • Take exit 27 GA 400 North (Dahlonega)
  • North 5 miles to exit 6, Northridge Road.
  • Turn right and cross over GA 400 then right onto Dunwoody Place.
  • Go .5 miles and right onto Roberts Drive.
  • Go .7 mile on Robert's Drive and right onto Island Ford Parkway, park entrance.

From GA 400 North

  • Take exit 6, Northridge Road.
  • Stay in the middle lane and go straight through light to Dunwoody Place
  • Go .5 miles to Roberts Drive turn right.
  • Go .7miles on Roberts Drive, park entrance will be on your right (Island Ford Parkway).

From GA 400 South

  • Take exit 6, Northridge Road.
  • Stay in right lane and cross over GA 400. Turn right onto Dunwoody Place.
  • Go .5 miles to Roberts Drive turn right.
  • Go .7 miles on Roberts Drive, park entrance will be on your right (Island Ford Parkway).

Indian Trail

Indian Trail offers several miles of trails that connect to a scenic overlook that offers excellent views of the Devil's Racecourse Shoals. The rugged granite palisades were called the Devil's Stairsteps during the 19th century by river boatmen because the shoals "were the devil" to navigate.

From I-285 East

  • Take exit 22, Northside Drive, New Northside Drive, Powers Ferry Road.
  • Right on Northside Drive to Powers Ferry Road.
  • Go through Intersection at Powers Ferry Road and 1.1 Miles to Indian Trail.
  • Right On Indian Trail and will dead end at the unit’s entrance.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 22, Northside Drive, New Northside Drive and Powers Ferry Road.
  • Straight to the second traffic light.
  • Left onto Northside Drive to Powers Ferry Road.
  • Go through the intersection at Powers Ferry and 1.1 miles to Indian Trail.
  • Right on Indian Trail and will dead end at the unit’s entrance.

Powers Island

Powers Island offers trails, picnic tables, and two canoe/kayak launches. One launches directly onto the Chattahoochee River, while the other launches onto an offshoot that contains a kayaking course. The course is maintained by the Atlanta Center of Excellence.

Powers Island is named for James Powers who once ferried travelers across the river.

  • Take exit 22, Northside Drive, New Northside Drive, Powers Ferry Road.
  • Go to second traffic light and turn left onto New Northside Drive
  • Use the through lane to pick up Interstate North Parkway.
  • Unit will be .6 miles on the right before the river.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 22, Northside Drive, New Northside Drive, Powers Ferry Road.
  • Right on to New Northside Drive.
  • Use the through lane to pick up Interstate North Parkway
  • Unit will be .6 miles on the right before the river.

From U.S. 41 South (Cobb Parkway)

  • Travel to Akers Mill Road
  • Left for bout 1.5 miles to the junction of Akers Mill and Powers Ferry Road.
  • Left going under I-285 than an immediate right onto Interstate North Parkway.
  • It will be .4 miles on the left after crossing the river.

From U.S. 41 North (Cobb Parkway)

  • Travel to Akers Mill Road
  • Right for bout 1.5 miles to the junction of Akers Mill and Powers Ferry Road.
  • Left going under I-285 than an immediate right onto Interstate North Parkway.
  • It will be .4 miles on the left after crossing the river.

Vickery Creek

Vickery Creek contains several miles of trails that connect to a City of Roswell park. There are a few picnic tables alongside the creek as well as some semi-strenuous cliff sides. Use caution when climbing on the rocks. The ruins of a 19th century mill can be found along the creek as well as the mill managers house at Allenbrook which still stands today.

  • Take exit 25, Roswell Road.
  • Left, travel 7 miles, cross the river to the intersection of Roswell Road and Riverside Road.
  • Right onto Riverside, cross Vickery Creek and make an immediate left for the unit.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 25, Roswell Road.
  • Right, travel 7 miles, cross the river to the intersection of Roswell Road and Riverside Road.
  • Right onto Riverside, cross Vickery Creek and make an immediate left for the unit.

From GA 400 North

  • Take exit 6, Northridge Road.
  • Right onto Northridge and go to the Roswell Road intersection.
  • Right; travel 2 miles to the intersection of Roswell Road and Riverside Road.
  • Right onto Riverside, cross Vickery Creek and make an immediate left to the unit.

From GA 400 South

  • Take exit 6, Northridge Road.
  • Left onto Northridge and go to the Roswell Road intersection.
  • Right; travel 2 miles to the intersection of Roswell Road and Riverside Road.
  • Right onto Riverside, cross Vickery Creek and make an immediate left to the unit.

Paces Mill

Paces Mill offers 3.5 miles of trails, a shaded picnic area, as well as plenty of places to wade fish or fish from shore.

From I-285 East

  • Take exit 19 U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway)
  • South 1.5 miles to the unit entrance on right, just beyond the BP Service Station. Do not cross the Chattahoochee.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 20 U.S. 41(Cobb Parkway)
  • South 1.5 miles to the unit entrance on right, just beyond the BP Service Station. Do not cross the Chattahoochee.

From I-75 North

  • Take Exit 25, Mt.. Paran Road.
  • Left on Mt.. Paran Road to U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway). Turn right on U.S. 41 for 1 mile cross the Chattahoochee and take an immediate left onto entrance road.

From I-75 South

  • Take Exit 25, Mt.. Paran Road.
  • Right on Mt.. Paran Road to U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway). Turn right on U.S. 41 for 1 mile cross the Chattahoochee and take an immediate left onto entrance road.

Gold Branch

The Gold Branch area of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area offers several miles of trails that border the river and Bull Sluice Lake. A small picnic area near the parking lot makes for a quick getaway in a quiet outdoor setting.

  • Right and go for just under 2.5 miles to unit, which will be on the right.

  • Right for 2.3 miles to Johnson Ferry Road.
  • Left for 2 miles to Lower Roswell Road.
  • Right and go for just under 2.5 miles to unit, which will be on the right.

From Roswell Road (GA 9) North to Johnson Ferry Road

  • Left for 4 miles on Lower Roswell Road
  • East and go for just under 2.5 miles to the unit, which will be on the right.

From Roswell Road (GA 9) South to Johnson Ferry Road

  • Right for 4 miles on Lower Roswell Road
  • East and go for just under 2.5 miles to the unit, which will be on the right.

From Roswell Road, GA 9 North (South Atlanta Street to Azalea Drive)

  • Left on Azalea Drive for 1.7 miles to Willeo Road.
  • Left on Willeo Road and 1.4 miles to junction of Lower Roswell and Timber Ridge Roads.
  • Bear left onto Lower Roswell Road and .7 miles to unit on left.

From Roswell Road, GA 9 South (South Atlanta Street to Azalea Drive)

  • Right on Azalea Drive for 1.7 miles to Willeo Road.
  • Left on Willeo Road and 1.4 miles to junction of Lower Roswell and Timber Ridge Roads.
  • Bear left onto Lower Roswell Road and .7 miles to unit on left

Akers Mill

Akers Mill offers several miles of trails and scenic spots including Sandy Point, a small beach-like area that juts into the river.

From I-285 East

  • Take exit 22, Northside Drive, New Northside Drive, Powers Ferry Road.
  • Right on Northside Drive to Powers Ferry Road.
  • Right 1.5 miles to Akers Drive
  • Left at the wooden “mill wheel.”
  • Unit entrance road will be the second left with visitor parking on the right.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 22, New Northside Drive, Northside Drive, Powers Ferry Road.
  • Straight to second traffic light.
  • Left on Northside Drive to Powers Ferry Road.
  • Right 1.5 miles to Akers Drive
  • Left at the wooden “mill wheel.”
  • Unit entrance road will be the second left with visitor parking being on the right.

From U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway North) to Akers Mill Road

  • Right 1 mile; pass the second entrance to Palisades Apartments.
  • Right at the wooden “mill wheel” onto Akers Drive.
  • Take second left, visitor parking will be on the right.

From U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway South) to Akers Mill Road

  • Right 1 mile; pass the second entrance to Palisades Apartments.
  • Right at the wooden “mill wheel” onto Akers Drive.
  • Take second left, visitor parking will be on the right.

Medlock Bridge

Medlock Bridge offers trails and a small picnic area as well as a boat ramp that can accommodate either motor driven boats or canoes and kayaks.

Directions

From I-85 North

  • Take exit 99, Jimmy Carter Blvd. (140).
  • Left and get onto GA 141 North lane and proceed 3 miles to Peachtree Industrial Blvd.
  • Right on Peachtree Industrial Blvd. to Holcomb Bridge Road.
  • Left on Holcomb Bridge Road and then right onto GA 141, Peachtree Parkway.
  • Go 3.6 miles on GA 141 (Medlock Bridge Road) to unit which will be on the right before crossing the river.

From I-85 South

  • Take exit 99, Jimmy Carter Blvd. (140).
  • Right and get into GA 141 North lane and proceed 3 miles to Peachtree Industrial Blvd.
  • Right on Peachtree Industrial Blvd. to Holcomb Bridge Road.
  • Left on Holcomb Bridge Road and then right onto GA 141, Peachtree Parkway.
  • Go 3.6 miles on GA 141 (Medlock Bridge Road) to unit which will be on the right prior to crossing the river.

From Buford Highway

  • U.S. 23 to Jimmy Carter Blvd, GA 140
  • Follow Above directions.

From Peachtree Industrial Blvd

  • Take GA 141 North 3.6 miles to the unit on the right prior to crossing the river.

From Buford Highway or Peachtree Industrial Blvd

  • Take GA 120 west to GA 141 South.
  • Go 4 miles, cross the river and the unit will be on the left
  • Note: The unit is less than one mile west of Peachtree Industrial Blvd and GA 120 intersection.

From GA 400 North

  • Take exit 7A, Holcomb Bridge/Norcross, GA 140 East.
  • Go 5.5 miles to intersection of Holcomb Bridge and Spalding Drive.
  • Left onto Spalding Drive and go 3.6 miles to Peachtree Parkway, GA 141.
  • Left and go 3.6 miles to unit on the right prior to crossing the river.

From GA 400 South

  • Take exit 10, Old Milton Parkway/Alpharetta, GA 120.
  • Right on Old Milton Parkway (GA120) 6.2 mile to GA 141 (Medlock Bridge).
  • Right 4 miles crossing the river and the unit will be on the left.

 

Settles Bridge

Directions

From GA 400

  • Take exit 14 the first turn towards Buford(GA State Road20/Cumming Hwy)
  • Travel on GA 20 to Suwanee Dam Road
  • Right onto Suwanee Dam Road and travel to Johnson Road
  • Right onto Johnson Rd.and travel toSettles Bridge Road(will dead end atSettles Bridge Rd.turn at stop sign on toSettle BR Rd.)
  • Right onto Settles Bridge Rd.(gravel road) and will dead end into parking lot.

From Peachtree Industrial Blvd.Traveling North:

  • Travel to Suwanee Dam Rd and turn left.
  • Once on Suwanee Dam Rd.travel to Johnson Rd.
  • Turn left onto Johnson Rd.and travel to the end of the road. The road will dead-end into a private sub-division.
  • Stop sign, turn right onto Settles Bridge Rd. Pavement will turn to gravel road and parking lot will be at the very end of the gravel road.

Bowman's Island

Bowman's Island has many great activities varying from horseback riding and hiking to boating and trout fishing.

Directions

From Peachtree Industrial Blvd North

  • Left onto Suwanee Dam Road 6.2 miles to Buford Dam Road.
  • Left on Buford Dam Road .3 miles to Island Ford Road.
  • Left on Island Ford Road and the unit will be .9 miles.

From Peachtree Industrial Blvd South

  • Right onto Suwanee Dam Road 6.2 miles to Buford Dam Road.
  • Left .3 miles to Island Ford Road.
  • Left and the unit will be .9 miles.

From GA400 North - Take exit 14 (GA State Road 20/Cumming Hwy)

  • Left at third light, which will be Nuckolles Road.
  • The road will dead-end into Buford Dam Road, turn right.
  • Approximately 5 miles and will cross the dam
  • Right onto Island Ford Road, .9 miles to the unit (pass church and unit will be immediately on the right).

From GA400 South - Take exit 14 (GA State Road 20/Cumming Hwy)

  • Left at the third light, which will be Nuckolles Road.
  • The road will dead-end into Buford Dam Road, turn right
  • Cross the Dam, approximately 5 miles
  • Right onto Island Ford Road, .9 miles to the unit (pass church and unit will be immediately on the right).

Whitewater Creek

Whitewater Creek offers easy access to the river for wading fisherman as well as several miles of trails that connect to the Indian Trail unit.

From I –285 East

  • Take exit 22, Northside Drive, New Northside Drive, Powers Ferry Road.
  •  Right on Northside Drive.
  • Go through the Powers Ferry intersection for 1.6 miles to Harris Trail (Caution light).
  • Right onHarrisTrailand .9 mile toWhitewater Creek Road.
  •  Right and entrance will be on the right (.1 mile).

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 22, Northside Drive, New Northside Drive, Powers Ferry Road.
  • Straight to second traffic light.
  • Left on Northside Drive, through the Powers Ferry Road intersection for 1.6 miles to Harris Trail (caution light).
  •  Right on Harris Trail and .9 miles to Whitewater Creek Road.
  • Right and travel.1 mile to the entrance on the right.

From I-75 North

  • Take exit 256, Mt. Paran Road.
  • Right on Mt. Paran Road to first traffic light (Harris Trail)
  • Left on Harris Trail to Whitewater Creek Road
  • Right about .4 miles to the unit which is on the left.

From U.S. 41 (Cobb Highway South)

  • Travel to Mt. Paran Road
  • Right on Mt. Paran Road, go to the first traffic light (Harris Trail) and turn left.
  • Go about .3 miles turn left onto Whitewater Creek Road.
  • Go .4 miles to the unit, which is on the left.

From U.S. 41 (Cobb Highway North)

  • Travel to Mt. Paran Road
  • Turn left on Mt. Paran Road, go to the first traffic light (Harris Trail) and turn left.
  • Go about .3 miles turn left onto Whitewater Creek Road.
  • Go .4 miles to the unit, which is on the left.

Abbotts Bridge

Abbotts Bridge has one trail along the river which begins near the boat ramp area. The boat ramp can accommodate either motor driven boats or canoes and kayaks. A sheltered picnic pavilion is located near the parking area.

  • Take exit 31B, Peachtree Industrial Blvd SR 141 North.
  • Go about 12.4 miles to Abbotts Bridge Road, GA120.
  • Turn Left and go .6 miles to unit, which will be on the left.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 31B, Peachtree Industrial Blvd SR 141 North.
  • Go about 12.4 miles to Abbotts Bridge Road, GA120.
  • Turn Left and go .6 miles to unit, which will be on the left.

From I-85 North

  • Take exit 107, GA 120, Duluth Highway.
  • Left on GA 120 through the city of Duluth 6.4 miles to the unit entrance on the left.

From I-85 South

  • Take exit 107, GA 120, Duluth Highway.
  • Right on GA 120 through the city of Duluth 6.4 miles to the unit entrance on the left.

From GA 400 North

  • Take exit 10, Old Milton Parkway/Alpharetta, GA 120.
  • Right on GA 120, Old Milton Parkway changes to name to Abbotts Bridge Road, 7.8 miles.
  • Cross the river and the unit will be on right just beyond Sand and Gravel Company.

From GA 400 South

  • Take exit 10, Old Milton Parkway/Alpharetta, GA 120.
  • Left on GA 120, Old Milton Parkway changes to name to Abbotts Bridge Road, 7.8 miles.
  • Cross the river and the unit will be on right just beyond Sand and Gravel Company.

Johnson Ferry South

Johnson Ferry South offers approximately 1.5 miles of trails that border the river. The trails were once a dirt farm road when the area was farmland in the early twentieth century.

From I-285 East

  • Take exit 24, Riverside Drive.
  • Left for 2.3 miles to Johnson Ferry Road
  • Left, Cross the river and then an immediate left onto Columns Drive
  • *Unit entrances’ are on the left.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 24, Riverside Drive.
  • Right for 2.3 miles to Johnson Ferry Road
  • Left, cross the river and then an immediate left onto Columns Drive
  • *Unit entrances’ are on the left.

*Note: First entrance .1 mile. Second entrance .7 miles. Second entrance has the picnic pavilion.

Sope Creek

Sope Creek is a more secluded entrance to the Cochran Shoals area. Offering scenic Sibley Pond and a more challenging trail for mountain bikers, Sope Creek is a good getaway in the middle of the city.   Named for a Cherokee holdout from the Trail of Tears, Sope Creek is a picturesque stream that flows into the river. The stone ruins along the creek banks are remnants of a paper manufacturing company that produced a large portion of the South's paper from 1855 to 1902.

  • Left for 2.7 miles to the junction of Johnson Ferry Road and Paper Mill Road.
  • Left onto Paper Mill Road for 2.2 miles, entrance will be on the left.

From I-285 West

  • Take exit 24, Riverside Drive.
  • North For 2.3 miles to Johnson Ferry Road.

From I-75 North

  • Take exit 260, Windy Hill Road.
  • Right to Powers Ferry Road.
  • Left for .9 miles to Terrell Mill Road
  • Right on Terrell Mill Road for 1.6 miles to 'right' turning lane for Paper Mill Road.
  • Unit will be on right 1.1 miles down the road.

From I-75 South

  • Take exit 260, Windy Hill Road.
  • Left to Powers Ferry Road.
  • Left for .9 miles to Terrell Mill Road
  • Right on Terrell Mill Road for 1.6 miles to 'right' turning lane for Paper Mill Road.
  • Unit will be on right 1.1 miles down the road.

From U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway North) to Windy Hill Road

  • Travel to Powers Ferry Road and follow I-75 directions as listed above.

From U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway South) to Terrell Mill Road

  • Travel to turning lane for Paper Mill Road.
  • Go 1.1 miles to the unit on the right.
