Overview

Roxborough State Park is officially designated as a National Natural Landmark, a State Natural Area and a National Archeological District. More than 1.2 billion years of geologic time are represented by the spectacular red-rock formations found within the park, which is located at the intersection of north Rampart Range Road and Roxborough Park Road in Douglas County. Ecologically, the park is highly diverse as a result of its location in a transition zone between the plains and the mountains. The area's geological structure has resulted in microclimates that have produced seven distinct plant communities in a unique mixture of prairie and mountain species. As a result, Roxborough is home to abundant wildlife, including black bear, mountain lion and deer. The park is known for its spectacular sightseeing, tranquil surroundings, fascinating trails and visitor center. This park offers hiking, snowshoeing and excellent educational programs on Colorado history, geology and wildlife watching. Roxborough is a day-use park only and does not offer camping. There are no pets and no fires allowed at Roxborough.

Activities

  • Hiking

Roxborough State Park offers a variety of trails for all abilities, from the half-mile Fountain Overlook trail that affords a spectacular view of rock formations, to the challenging 6.4-mile trek to 7,160-foot Carpenter Peak. Hikers are reminded to stay on the trail and beware of rattlesnakes and poison ivy. Pets, horses, and mountain bikes are not allowed on the trails. Hours vary each month but generally the trails are open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the summer and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter.

  • Historic Sites

Roxborough State Park provides a variety of interpretive programs throughout the year.

  • Picnicking

The park does not provide picnic facilities. However, visitors are welcome to bring a lunch and eat at one of the benches at the visitor center or along park trails. Bench locations are marked on the trail map.

  • Winter Sports

The scenery is quite dramatic when snow covers Roxborough's ridges and spires. The myriad of animal tracks in the snow tell the stories of wildlife's winter activities. Novice and advanced cross-country skiers and snowshoers enjoy recreating on the gentle trails. The next time there is a measurable snowfall in the Denver area, head to Roxborough, but don't wait too long after the snowfall. Because many of the trails are exposed, Roxborough veterans say the snow melts quickly--often, within one or two days of the snowfall. Going off the trails and snowmobiling are not permitted in the park.

Seasonality/Weather

Park open year-round.
