Colorado River WMD
Overview
The Colorado River Wildlife Management Area was established in 1999. This refuge was established for the primary purpose of recovering four endangered fish species of the Upper Colorado River system: the Colorado pikeminnow, the razorback sucker, and the humpback and bonytailed chubs. The Upper Colorado River system includes portions of the Green, Colorado, and Gunnison Rivers in Colorado and Utah. Ouray National Wildlife Refuge administers and manages the refuge. The intent of this acquisition program is to preserve and protect critical habitat from development and to allow periodic flooding for the benefit of the four endangered fish species. The terms of the existing conservation easements generally disallow impeding river flows from inundating bottomland habitats which historically were used by native fishes.
