The National Park Service at Coronado National Memorial in cooperation with the Federal Highways Administration is proposing to resurface, restore and rehabilitate the previously paved 3.5 miles of roadway within the memorial and to provide a sustainable drainage system along the paved portion of the roadway.
The purpose of the project is to address health and safety concerns related to the aging roadway infrastructure that has reached the end of its structural integrity, enhance the experience of park visitors and restore the graded channel within Montezuma Wash.
Extreme flooding in recent years has altered the channel of Montezuma Wash and it is threatening the stability of the road.
The Coronado Cave Trail is located within the channel of Montezuma Wash.
Due to the extreme flooding events experienced in the past few years maintaining this portion of the trail has come at an increased expense and is a repetitive maintenance issue.
