Ranger-Guided Snowshoe Walks Being Offered at Crater Lake

Clear the Air: 'It's Fogging Hard' instead of Raining
December 2, 2008, 12:07 pmThe last day of November felt like a month's worth of fog settled over the Medford airport.
At the end of one of the foggiest Novembers in recent memory, Horizon Air had to cancel nine flights into or out of Medford. Air traffic returned to normal by mid-day Monday as a weak weather system approached Southern Oregon. Forecasters were predicting rain Monday night and showers early today, but fog was expected to roll back into the valley later in the day and persist through the weekend.

Middle Fork Blaze Heads Toward Crater Lake
September 19, 2008, 12:45 pmA fire burning east of Prospect nearly doubled in size in a day and is burning into Crater Lake National Park, the Forest Service said Thursday.
The Middle Fork fire grew to 13,895 acres, up from 7,770 acres Wednesday, as flames raged through the treetops along the fire's northern edge.

Rattle Fire Disrupts Travel to Crater Lake
September 11, 2008, 12:57 pmOne of two major forest fires burning in the Northwest is disrupting visitor travel to Crater Lake National Park.
The Rattle Fire grew over 250 acres on Monday to 2,238 acres. The blaze 30 miles east of Glide, Ore., poses a possible threat to residences in the community of Dry Creek as well as Pacific Corp powerlines.

The Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands could become the second United Nations World Heritage site in Hawaii, joining Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

A series of programs are under way at Saguaro National Park. Explore the natural and cultural history of the park. Come along on a naturalist-led evening walk or join a local expert for a presentation in the visitor center. Programs will be offered at both districts. There is no charge for interpretive programs, but park entrance fees apply.

About 300 National Park Service employees have the opportunity to get around D.C. in an environmentally-friendly way. In a one-year demo program between the NPS and Lousiville, Ky.-based Humana Inc., the health-benefit company is giving 30 bikes to NPS employees to help them cut down on auto gas emissions.

There are any number of things that could be done with the upcoming, huge stimulus package to put Americans back to work and and improve infrastructure. About $2.5 billion of that could go to our national parks, says the National Parks Conservation Association, and they have a plan.
