Crater Lake National Park and Lava Beds National Monument saw more visitors this year compared to last year.

Crater Lake National Park spokesman Michael Justin said the number of visitors in July and August increased from 267,000 in 2008 to 304,000 in the same months this year. September visitor numbers had not yet been reported.

The park was helped by opening its north entrance 14 days earlier than planned, due to good weather, and also because more people stayed closer to home for vacations, Justin said.

Lava Beds saw a 20 percent increase to 122,000 visitors this summer, up from 101,000 last year.
