Entering the Crossings of Colonie from its main entrance on Albany Shaker Road, visitors are greeted by the field stone columns and wooden fence that buffer The Orchard and the interior of the park from the road. Laid out in a grid pattern similiar to that of a fruit tree orchard, The Orchard offers breathtaking vistas of the Heldeberg escarpment. After traveling through The Orchard, the view opens up to the west into The Arboretum and the sundial garden surrounded by a capped field stone wall. Within this area, there are a variety of indigenous and ornamantal plantings, gardens, and various trees. The Meadow is an open pasture with patches of native wildflowers on the east side of the entrance drive. The Meadow provides an ideal setting for walking, jogging, bicycling, kite flying and enjoyment of scenery. South of Park Square, The Ramble contains winding shaded walking trails in a natural hardwood forest that comes alive with the autumn foliage. Visitors of all ages can learn about woodland ecology and flora and fauna from specially posted informational signs.
