McKinley Bar East

Latitude, Longitude: 63.439727, 150.566425

This unit is a thin strip of land between the north bank of the McKinley River and the park road. Much of this unit consists of gentle rolling hills with heavy brush and intermittent tundra swamps. The terminus of the Muldrow Glacier, consisting primarily of gravel, is at the eastern end of the unit. The Thorofare River flows in one channel along the edge of a glacier, through a gorge, and then past the glacier to meet with the McKinley River. The McKinley River bar is approximately 1 to 1 ½ miles wide, and consists of numerous river braids. Mosquitos tend to swarm around hikers between June and mid-August.
