The East Fork River runs through a varied terrain of high hills and steep slopes. In many areas, the slopes of the Outer Range are totally exposed, giving the hiker a good view of the geological processes that created the range. Rock colors range from black-grey to bright orange. In the more gentle areas, many of the lower slopes are covered with dry tundra and willow. Wildflowers abound on the river bar as well as on these lower hills.
