Ranger Guided

Ranger guided tours of Poe's historic home are available. The tours are 30-45 minutes. During the tour, photos and questions are encouraged. Poe's home consists of 6 rooms and the basement. Before and after the tour, feel free to review some the site's exhibits, reading room and sales center.

Tours are also offered by the park's dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers.

Upcoming Events

August 2008 (Exact Date to Be Announced)
Hal Poe, who is a descendant of one of Poe’s cousins, will speak at the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site. Dr. Poe, a professor at Union University in Tennessee, will share inside knowledge of the most famous member of his family tree.

October 2008 through February 2009
The Rare Book Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia will devote all 17 of their temporary exhibit cases to the Gimbel Poe Collection, allowing unprecedented public access to this world-class collection. http://www.library.phila.gov

A seasonal favorite: Park Rangers provide an evening tour through Poe’s home by candlelight, exploring Poe’s themes of horror. Because these tours are so popular and always sell out, they have been expanded to two evenings! Benefits Friends of Poe; call (215) 861-4971. Fee for evening tour is $10.

January 10, 2009 (Time to Be Announced)

A great Poe actor, David Keltz, will portray “Eddy” at the Central Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia. Helen Whitman, portrayed by Park Ranger Helen McKenna-Uff, will also appear that day. http://www.library.phila.gov

  • Sit back and enjoy an eight-minute audio-visual presentation on Poe's life.
  • Read articles in the "Poe in the News" section of the theater.
  • Take a self-guided or ranger-led tour of Poe's historic house.
  • Indulge your literary passion in the reading room patterned after Poe's essay, "The Philosophy of Furniture."
  • Listen to Poe's works narrated by famous actors such as Vincent Price, Basil Rathbone, Christopher Walken and others.
  • If music is more your fancy, tap your feet to the various works of Poe put to music by the Alan Parson Project, Lou Reed and others.
  • Sign the guest book and let your comments be known to others who visit the site.
  • Join the mailing list to receive information on upcoming special events.
  • Pose with the site's "Raven" statue.
  • Take a picture in front of the Poe mural.
  • Consider joining the "Friends of Poe."
