Savannas Preserve State Park

Manager's Message Special Notice: Due to recently inclement weather, the canoe launch road is flooded and currently closed to vehicular traffic. While the hiking trails are open, most trails are flooded. Please proceed with caution until the flood waters subside. Happy summer from Savannas Preserve State Park, where rain this year has kept our marsh brimming with water and wildlife. Although exploring South Florida's natural environments in the heat of the summer can be daunting, now is a great time to visit the Savannas. More than ever, it makes a peaceful setting for hiking, kayaking, or simple reflection. A breeze off the marsh keeps many trails cool enough for walking, especially if you avoid the heat of the day. Kayaking is ever-popular, and we are offering guided tours on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Many wading birds are fishing the marsh, and can be seen in the mornings and evenings. The Education Center offers a chance to escape the heat, with many interesting videos to watch, interactive displays, friendly staff, and an ever-changing variety of live animals to observe. The marsh vistas are breathtaking and easily accessed from the White and Yellow Trails. Try taking a hike along our Yellow Trail to experience the rainbow of wildflowers just coming into bloom. As always, fishing and kayaking are great options. If you're new to the Savannas, be sure to visit our Education Center first to pick up a trail guide and learn more about the park. We look forward to seeing you soon! - Dan Griffin, Park Manager Welcome to Savannas Preserve State Park Freshwater marshes or "savannas" once extended all along Florida's southeast coast. Stretching more than 10 miles from Ft. Pierce to Jensen Beach, this preserve is the largest and most intact remnant of Florida's east coast savannas. A good place for visitors to start is the Environmental Education Center where they can learn about the importance of this unique and endangered natural system. Picnic tables are available near the center. Canoeing, kayaking, and fishing in the wetlands are popular activities. Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers can enjoy the diversity of habitats this undisturbed area offers. Over eight miles of multi-use trails provide opportunities for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. Guided walks and canoe trips are available by reservation. The Education Center is located in Port St. Lucie, two miles east of U.S. 1 on Walton Road. Contact the Florida Park Service Information Center for general inquiries.
