Fort Sumter by Ferry
The concession-operated ferry leaves from two locations: Liberty Square (340 Concord Street, Charleston, SC), and Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum (40 Patriots Point Road, Mount Pleasant, SC).

Fort Sumter by Private Boat
Fort Sumter is open year round except for New Years, Thanksgiving and Christmas Days. Hours of operation are:

The Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center at Liberty Square is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except for New Years, Thanksgiving and Christmas Days.

Fort Moultrie
1214 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island

Fort Moultrie is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except for New Year's, Thanksgiving and Christmas Days.

Park Headquarters
1214 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island
Park Headquarters is open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except for federal holidays.

Fees & Reservations

Fort Sumter
For ferry ticket prices, please visit the ferry concessioner's website. There is no entrance fee for visitors who arrive by private boat.

Please note that the ferry concessioner does not accept America the Beautiful - National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Passes, National Parks, Golden Eagle, Golden Age or Golden Access Passes.

Fort Moultrie
There is an entrance fee for Fort Moultrie. The site is accessible by car at 1214 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island.

*Visitors to Fort Moultrie who have the America the Beautiful - National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Pass are admitted free of charge according to the provisions of the pass. All National Parks Passes, Golden Eagle, Golden Eagle Hologram, Golden Access and Golden Age Passports will continue to be honored according to the provisions of the pass. Only paper Golden Age and Access Passports may be exchanged free of charge for new plastic passes.

**All organized groups (schools or otherwise) visiting Fort Moultrie require advance reservations regarless of size. Only groups from bona fide educational organizations visiting Fort Moultrie as part of an established curriculum may qualify for a fee waiver. Please call (843) 883-3123 x 20 to make a reservation. Requests for reservations by e-mail are not accepted.

Accessibility

Accessibility to the Fort Sumter Ferry is currently limited. The accessibility ramp located at the Fort Sumter Visitor Center in downtown Charleston recently suffered damage and will be out of service until further notice.

For mobility impaired visitors, the boat can currently accommodate manual wheelchairs only. Motorized wheelchairs cannot be taken aboard. For the best accessibility, plan to depart from the Fort Sumter Visitor Center as close to low tide as possible. Please note that even at low tide there may be one or more steps to negotiate while getting on board. Contact the park for more information.

Fort Sumter Ferry
A ramp system makes access a reality for all who visit Fort Sumter by ferry from the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center in downtown Charleston. Even motorized wheelchairs are no longer a barrier. The ferry departing from Patriots Point is not accessible. 

Inside Fort Sumter
Elevators inside Fort Sumter give disabled visitors access to all levels of the fort. See a ranger when you arrive on site if you need to use the elevators. 

Fort Moultrie
The visitor center and a majority of the fort are accessible by wheelchair. A wheelchair is available at no cost and can be checked out at the visitor center. Park Headquarters is fully accessible.

Directions to Fort Sumter

Fort Sumter is located on an island in Charleston harbor and is only accessible by boat.

If you do not have access to a private boat, a concession-operated ferry is available. The primary departure site is from the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center located in downtown Charleston. For departure schedules and fees, visit the concessioner's website.

The secondary departure site is located at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. Visitors with large vehicles such as buses and RVs should plan on using the Patriots Point departure site.

Take I-26 E to Charleston.
Exit at Meeting Street.
Pass the Charleston Visitor Center on the right.
Proceed through one traffic light (John Street)
Turn left at next light onto Calhoun Street.
Proceed through two traffic lights (East Bay Street and Washington Street).
The visitor center is straight ahead.
Parking is on the left in the garage (7' clearance) or on Concord Street by meter. (Note: Most meters are two-hour limit.)

From points North on US-17
Exit at Meeting Street.
Pass the Charleston Visitor Center on the right.
Proceed through one traffic light (John Street).
Turn left at next light onto Calhoun Street.
Proceed through two traffic lights (East Bay Street and Washington Street).
The visitor center is straight ahead.
Parking is on the left in the garage (7' clearance) or on Concord Street by meter. (Note: Most meters are two-hour limit.)

From points South on US-17
Take the Calhoun Street exit.
Merge with Lockwood Drive. Stay in the left lane.
Turn left on Calhoun Street.
Proceed through ten traffic lights until you cross Washington Street.
The visitor center is straight ahead.
Parking is on the left in the garage (7' clearance) or on Concord Street by meter. (Note: Most meters are two-hour limit.)

Please note: You cannot get to Fort Sumter from Sullivan's Island and Fort Moultrie. The Sullivan's Island address is for mail and the street address for Fort Moultrie.

Directions to Fort Moultrie & Park Headquarters

Fort Moultrie and Park Headquarters are both located at 1214 Middle Street on Sullivan's Island and are accessible by car.

From Mount Pleasant & US 17
- From US 17 follow the signs for SC 703 and Sullivan's Island.
- Take SC 703 to Sullivan's Island.
- Cross the Intracoastal Waterway at the Ben Sawyer Bridge.
- Continue straight on Ben Sawyer Boulevard to Middle Street.
- Turn right at the stop sign onto Middle Street.
- The Fort Moultrie Visitor Center and parking is 1.5 miles away on Middle Street.

Please note: You can't get to Fort Sumter from Fort Moultrie.

Public Transportation

Traffic & Travel Tips

To visit Fort Sumter by RV or bus, we recommend taking the ferry from Patriots Point. Their parking area can easily accommodate large vehicles. Parking for large vehicles in downtown Charleston is extremely limited, and the public parking garage has a clearance of 7'.

To visit Fort Moultrie by RV or bus, the parking area at the Fort Moultrie Visitor Center can accommodate your vehicle.
