York area developer Robert Kinsley and a construction company owned by his son have been paid $8.5 million for their work in building the new Battlefield Visitor Center near Gettysburg.
In a National Journal report written by Edward Pound, Kinsley denies that he made a profit on the project. Kinsley, chairman of the Gettysburg Foundation Board of Directors since the panel’s creation, maintains that he did the project for philanthropic reasons.
The United States Inspector General is investigating the park and Gettysburg Foundation’s use of companies that are affiliated with Kinsley.
“I made a promise when I went to Gettysburg that I would not profit from this or anything else in Gettysburg because of this (project),” Kinsley told The National Journal. “I am very happy I have been able to contribute to Gettysburg the way I have. I just wish (critics) would do the same.”
