Shuttle ridership at Glacier National Park was down about 20 percent this year because of a later start, shorter hours and mechanical difficulties, officials said Wednesday.
"We haven't decided what changes to make next season," said park spokeswoman Amy Vanderbilt. "We'll hold some planning sessions to analyze the data later this fall."

It's too early for civilians. As dawn's first light falls on the jagged peaks, creeps down the dwindling glaciers and glides across glass-faced Swiftcurrent Lake, most of the tourists in the Many Glacier Hotel are still snoozing.

Searchers continued to comb Glacier National Park’s backcountry wilderness Monday, hunting for a hiker now a full week overdue.
Tuesday, however, will bring a substantially scaled-back effort, unless new evidence emerges as to the fate of 27-year-old Yi-Jien Hwa.
“We are still hopeful that additional information will eventually surface that will lead us to Yi-Jien,” incident commander Patrick Suddath said. “But we know that the odds for that outcome are reduced with each day that goes by. In the absence of a promising development, we will be scaling back the operation.”

There will be balloons and a cake shaped like Glacier National Park, with 100 candles burning a paraffin forest fire across the frosted landscape.
There likely will be silly hats and noisemakers, too.

The tourists huddled in a shivering pack amid what should have been the heat of July, crowding around Laura Kloeck while she explained a bit about climate change.
“There is definitely a frightening side to global warming,” Kloeck told them, “but there is hope, too.”
Hope hip-deep, white and wintry and piled high in mid-July atop Glacier National Park's popular Logan Pass. Here, where trails remained buried beneath snowpack well into summer's season, Kloeck talked on about a warming world.
