The National Park Foundation today joined The Conservation Land Trust in convening the Wildlands Philanthropy Forum to explore the opportunities and challenges of conservation philanthropy. Taking place at Fort Baker in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the historic gathering brought together the nation's top conservation, corporate, nonprofit and philanthropic partners to explore how private philanthropy can help solve the urgent ecological challenges facing our planet.

The sweeping expanse that includes parts of the San Francisco waterfront, Marin Headlands and iconic sites such as Alcatraz Island and Muir Woods would be renamed the Golden Gate National Parks, under a bill by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The legislation would slap a new moniker on the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, officially making it the 59th national park.

Golden Gate Bridge drivers could find themselves paying a $7 or higher toll if they cross the span during peak periods, under a plan released by the bridge district Thursday.
Bridge district officials presented two options: one would increase the cash toll by $1 and the FasTrak toll by 50 cents, the other would see each go up $1.

The unveiling of the Bay Area’s first urban national park lodge is just around the corner. Scheduled to open on June 1, 2008, the luxury Cavallo Point, the Lodge at the Golden Gate, is sure to bring serious style to its home base of Ft. Baker, a former military post in Golden Gate National Park.A ribbon-cutting ceremony, with government and National Park Service officials, will take place on Saturday, June 14, but rooms are available starting June 1. The hotel will offer 68 historic rooms and 74 modern rooms, and rates range from the mid-$200s (pre-tax) per night.

The red-legged frog sat motionless amid tangled vegetation in a wetland area below the spectacular cliffs of Mori Point, just a short walk from a beach in Pacifica where bootlegging and a notorious gunbattle once raged. The federally threatened frog has survived on this sweeping promontory of cliffs, bluffs and wetlands despite almost constant human disruption over the years, including dredging, development and off-road vehicles, not to mention booze and gunfire.
