If you're taking a summer vacation to Grand Canyon National Park this year, plan to stop and visit Walnut Canyon National Monument. It's only 8 miles east of Flagstaff and a quick 3 miles off Interstate 40. You won't find an easier and more enjoyable way to see extremely well-preserved cliff dwellings. You can spend a couple of hours or a leisurely half-day. Either way, Walnut Canyon is a beautiful and popular side trip as you head to the Grand Canyon.

There is a hard balance that places like Grand Canyon try to find between the experience and the safety of the public. The history of the Park includes unfortunate events. The Park does take measures to prevent these sad occurrences from happening and is very much prepared to take emergency actions should it be necessary.

Grand Canyon National Park is home to a wide assortment of dangerous animals. The mountain lion, with retractable claws and large teeth, patrols vass areas of land within Grand Canyon National Park occassionally wandering into Grand Canyon Village. Black bears with massive and incredibly strong bodies and insatiable appettites are also register in NPS' Grand Canyon mamallian animal list. Elk, especially during the rut, can charge without notice bringing their sharp antlers to bear with 750 pounds of muscle behind them.

The store that housed Verkamp's Curios for about a century on the South Rim has been converted into a book store, a center for visitors, and a starting point for Grand Canyon hikes, the National Park Service said Monday.

A small lightning-caused fire has been discovered on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park. The 'November Fire' is burning in ponderosa pine and some fir approximately 6.5 miles north and west of the developed area on the North Rim, according to a U.S. Forest Service news release.

Officers, deputies and rescuers from eight public safety agencies worked today and Sunday to evacuate more than 400 campers and residents from Supai Canyon after heavy rainfall and the breach of an earthen dam flooded the area. No injuries were immediately reported.
