Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton Camping

Grand Teton National Park has established campgrounds, designated backcountry campsites and backcountry camping zones for your use. If you have the required backcountry permit, you're free to pitch your tent at designated lakeshore sites, within specified camping zones, or in remote wilderness locations.

Campgrounds

There are seven concessioner- operated campgrounds located throughout the park. Five of the campgrounds offer sites on a first-come, first-served basis for a nightly fee (two campgrounds are RV parks which accept advanced reservations). Reservations are accepted for group sites (10 to 75 people) at Gros Ventre and Colter Bay campgrounds. Group reservations may be made by calling the Grand Teton Lodge Company at (307) 543-2811 or (800) 628-9988 or faxing a request to (307) 543-3143. There is a modest per-night, per- person fee for group camping.

Jenny Lake campground is restricted to tents only, but all other campgrounds allow recreational vehicles. Trailer sites with hookups are available at Colter Bay and Flagg Ranch. All other campgrounds have modern comfort stations, but no utility hookups. Most campgrounds tend to fill up early each day in the summer, some by 8 a.m. For information about site availability, call (307) 739-3603 or ask at any visitor center. Fees are generally $17 per site, per night (higher fees for RV parks with hookups). The maximum stay is seven nights at Jenny Lake and 14 nights at all other campgrounds.

Bridger-Teton National Forest, Caribou-Targhee National Forest, and the communities of Jackson, Teton Village, Victor and Driggs also have public campgrounds.

Gros Ventre has 360 sites and a trailer dumping station. It is open from early May to mid-October. This is the largest campground in the park and usually reaches capacity latest in the day. There are also five group camping sites. Advanced reservations are requested.

Jenny Lake has 51 sites (tents only). Open from mid-May to late September. This location is extremely popular and usually fills up by 8 a.m. There is easy access to Cascade Canyon trails from these sites.

Signal Mountain has 81 sites and a trailer dumping station. It is open from early May to mid-October. These sites usually fill up by 10 a.m.

Colter Bay has 350 sites, showers, a laundry, a grocery store, a trailer dumping station and propane. It is open from late May to late September. There are 11 group sites. Advanced reservations are requested.

Lizard Creek has 60 sites. Open from early June to early September, these sites usually fill up by 2 p.m.

Backcountry Camping Zones

Overnight backcountry use is allowed in Grand Teton National Park with a permit. Campsites encompass lakeshore sites that allow fires in established grates to higher-elevation sites where fires are prohibited, including several remote camping zones above 7,000 feet.

Backcountry campsites are limited and provided on a first-come, firstserved basis. You can pick up or arrange permits in person at the backcountry desks at Moose or Colter Bay visitor centers and Jenny Lake Ranger Station. Note that 30 percent of the available permits may be obtained in advance by reservation via fax, mail, or in person between January 1 and May 15. For information about this process, visit the park's website at www.nps.gov or call (307) 739-3309.

When camping in the backcountry, it is essential that you protect your food from bears and scavenging animals by following recommended food storage procedures. Consult a ranger or get the NPS pamphlet, Backcountry Camping, for advice. To obtain the backcountry camping pamphlet online, please visit the website at www.nps.gov/grte. Also see "Bears" on pages 44—45.
