Join UH-Hilo Dance Division head Celeste Anderson Staton, who is trained in authentic Pilates Matwork techniques. She can modify the work to benefit any level of student. This 8-week class focuses on building core strength of the central body while lengthening muscle and instilling a sense of well being for the whole person. NOTE: This class takes place over eight successive Mondays, October 20 - December 15 (skip 12/8). Beginner students meet from 5:15 to 6:15 pm, and intermediate students meet from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.

Join master book artists Donna & Peter Thomas, authors of More Making Books By Hand, to expand your bookmaking skills! In the morning you'll make a case bound book with sewn pages, also known as a traditional hardbound blank book. In the afternoon you'll make the unique and innovative "scrolling book," a binding structure created by the instructors to fuse Western and Eastern book structures. Bring a haiku's worth of words, and if time allows you can add images and/or text to the scrolling book.

Enjoy the open air while volunteering to help preserve the beauty and diversity of the native, old growth rainforest at Volcano Art Center's Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village (corner of Kalanikoa & Old Volcano Roads). Held on the third Sunday of each month, these work days are a unique opportunity for individuals, families, and groups to connect with nature and with each other while assisting in a variety of needed tasks, plus learn about the rich mixture of flora and fauna on the 7.4 acre property.

Join master book artists Donna & Peter Thomas, authors of More Making Books By Hand, as they help you develop or expand your bookmaking skills in this workshop. With basic bookbinding instructions, you can participate in a discussion of book arts concepts and techniques and get a shot at hands-on bookmaking. By the end of the day, you'll create three different miniature books: a pocket accordion book, a case bound accordion book, and a nested pop-up accordion book. If time allows, you can add images and/or text to the books.

Join master book artist Peter Thomas, co-author of More Making Books By Hand as he explains what a miniature book is, gives a short history of the genre, and addresses such questions as: What is a book? What is an artists' book? What are the aesthetic attributes of an artists' book? What is the history of the artists' book? Where does one find one? Thomas speaks from the context of his own work, using books he and his wife have made as examples.

This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7-mile loop trail. The walk introduces individuals, families, and groups to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus not only on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, but also the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians. Offered every Monday at 9:30 a.m., the weekly walk starts just one mile from the entrance to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Join botanist Tim Tunison as he shares his wisdom about native plants and their upbringing. Understand the nuances and niches of many native plant species and learn propagation techniques for use in landscaping and native forest restoration. This workshop is held on-site in the gardens and backyard forests of Volcano Village, and you'll go home with several varieties of seeds and cuttings to grow and plant!

Join professional photographer Robert Frutos as he shares his wisdom about the world of digital photography. This in-depth and fun introductory workshop is designed to guide you through the steps of digital photography, from shooting the digital image to "developing" the finished photograph, using Photoshop as an electronic "darkroom." All you need is a basic understanding of computer use, a digital camera, and a laptop loaded with Photoshop 4 or higher.

Learn the basics of 'ukulele playing with a patient and experienced instructor, Wes Awana, whose system of teaching makes it easy for anyone to play this popular Hawaiian instrument. This 6-week class focuses on how to tune your instrument, basic strumming, and how to finger all the major, minor, and seventh cords. Open to ages 12 & up with your own instrument. NOTE: This class meets every Tuesday from October 7th through November 11th, and each session is one hour long.

The landscape paintings in Cameron’s debut exhibit at the VAC Gallery, entitled "Volcano Skies," depict the majesty of the Kilauea region, and were inspired by the recent gas and steam plume emanating from Halema'uma'u Crater.
