Heron Reservoir
Overview
A picturesque lake set among tall pines, Heron Reservoir and State Park has been designated as a quiet and peaceful place. The reservoir and surrounding park is known for its excellent sailing, fishing, cross-country skiing, windsurfing, and hiking. There are also several scenic campgrounds lining the shore of the lake from primitive to fully developed with all services. Access the hiking and fishing trail along the gorgeous Rio Chama from the dramatic caprock stairway near Heron Dam. The 5.5-mile trail which crosses the river by suspension bridge, affords panoramic views and an adventurous route to neighboring El Vado Lake.
Activities
Boating
This park is known for its excellent sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing. Boats operate at no-wake speeds only.
Camping
Several scenic campgrounds line the shore of this scenic reservoir, both primitive and full developed campsites are available.
Fishing
At the reservoir, you can fish for record-size trout. Ice-fishing is also popular in winter for the arctic set.
Hiking

Picnic tables and grills are available within the park.

Heron Reservoir and State Park is located 11-miles west of Tierra Amarilla, via US highways 64 and 84 and NM 95.
