Hidden Cave Archaeological Area

Things To Do

Four school boys in the mid-1920s are believed to be the first 20th century humans to visit Hidden Cave. Since their visit, the cave has been excavated three times—1940, 1951, 1979-80. The cave is believed to have been carved out approximately 21,000 years ago by the waves of Lake Lahontan. The majority of artifacts discovered in the cave were unbroken and arranged in a way to lead archaeologists that the cave was used as a cache site by people 3,500 to 3,800 years ago. The Churchill County Museum, teamed with the BLM, offer free public tours twice a month. Special tours are also available to groups for a small fee on days that the free tour is not offered.
