Homestead National Monument of America

Just For Kids

Be A Junior Ranger

Young visitors are invited to become Junior Rangers. The program is fun, educational, and free! After completing pages in the Junior Ranger booklet, the child earns a badge and certificate. Activities are geared for ages 5 to 8 and 9 to 12, and they include drawing a picture, dot-to-dot, matching historical equipment to the equivalent equipment today, crossword puzzle, word find, and more.

Junior Rangers are special people who are dedicated to their National Parks. Their mission is to explore, learn, and protect, and to have fun while doing it! Any kid who visits has the chance to be a Junior Ranger. Here’s what you do. Stop at the visitor center to pick up a booklet filled with both creative and informative activities. As you explore the Monument, complete at least four pages. Show your work to a Ranger to earn an official Junior Ranger badge and signed certificate. Then, go out and teach others about what you learned during your visit.

The Junior Ranger corps is constantly growing. Will you be the next protector of your parks?

Park Fun

Follow in the footsteps of the kids who lived on the first homesteads. Dress in homesteaders' clothes, visit a one-room schoolhouse and imagine being mixed with students from all grades, and go inside a log cabin where ten children grew up—and no one got their own bedroom!

Or, discover where modern technology meets history by going on a GPS walk. Bring an adult to the Education Center to check out a GPS unit. Then, it's up to you to navigate through the tallgrass prairie without getting lost!

The whole family can enjoy the Monument's special events. Annual programs include the Junior Ranger Rendezvous, the Heartland Storytelling Festival, and the Monumental Fiddling Championship.
