Plan Your Visit to Powerton Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area (IL)

Located in central Illinois in Tazewell County one mile southwest of Pekin, the lake was built on a floodplain of the Illinois River in 1971 by Commonwealth Edison Company as a cooling reservoir for the fossil-fuel power plant. Today, the completely diked, 1,400-acre lake is leased by the Department of Natural Resources for visitor fishing and hunting. The entire shoreline is rocky.
