Tour a National Park by Cell Phone

September 19, 2008, 9:59 am
If you’ve ever toured a national battlefield or historic site using an audio guide on tape or CD, or with a handheld device like an Acoustiguide, you know how much these tours can add to your experience of the park’s story. These tools can be cumbersome for parks to maintain, however, especially if devices need to be recharged between uses. They require storage space in the visitor center, personnel to manage their distribution and return, and costly replacements when technology changes or when visitors drive away—accidentally or not—with the audio guide in their car. Thanks to ubiquitous mobile technology, however, there’s a better way: Tour by cellular phone.
